ive been listening to thier song flirtin with disaster and thinking, thats such a killer rythm sound! anyone know what gear they are using (the guitars). thanks

Re: molly hatchet sound.....

Dave Hlubek alternated between a Les Paul Standard, Hamer (I think) Explorer and a Custom "Flying 'P'". Duane Roland used a Gibson V and Steve Holland was playing a modified Strat if I remember correctly. Most of the interviews that I read said that they were using Peavey Mace amps, but, like Skynyrd, there's an awful lot of Marshall and Fender tone there, and they may have recorded with something else.

Yes

Re: molly hatchet sound.....

That whole album (CD) is killer. I remember when it came out (I'm 41), I read an interview with them and I swear I remember something about a Hamer guitar. Definetely some Strats & Pauls but they said they only used Peavey amps. Now I don't know if that was just for endorsement purposes or what but that's what they said. I remember thinking I've never heard a Peavey that sounded like that! :smoker:

I remember reading where MH used Skynyrd's Mace Peavey amps in their Jacksonville studio. I really miss this good time music :bigok:

Re: molly hatchet sound.....

I think they are still around and going under the name, but not one original member is still in the band. How do they get away with retaining the Molly Hatchet name?

Re: molly hatchet sound.....

Hlubek was a hot, hot guitar player when Hatchet came out. A flat out smoker, I still love the first 2 albums. Their version of Dreams is so great I'll sound stupid talking about it.

Dave used a lot of Explorers (Hamer and Gibson). I remember reading an article with him ages ago and he had like 75 of them at one point, his accountant kept telling him to buy them. Nowadays he plays a Strat. They were so good live back in the day it wasn't even funny.

When they signed with their label, they also signed away their publishing and ownership rights, instead of footing the $$ needed to TM and copyright their own material, set up their own publishing entity and then license their songs to the label for distribution.
As a result, anyone in that situation can find themselves kicked out of their own band! And then the label can put anyone they want to under that 'brand name' and sell records.
It's astounding that labels will do this ... but the bean counters only look at it in terms of dollars and cents, not people.

A variation on this theme is when Ozzy had his original bass and drum tracks from the 1st two solo albums re-tracked by studio musicians to get out of paying royalties to the original rhythm section. That's what happens when you sign away your ownership of your own ideas. Welcome to the wacky world of intellectual properties, where your very thoughts can be sold out from under you!!

The Deathrider by Frank Frazetta; perhaps the most recognizable piece of fantasy art every!!

Re: molly hatchet sound.....

I have an old '78 Peavey Deuce whch is essentially the cousin to the Mace-- played through Celestion speakers, you get that Fender vibe. They may have run the heads through various cabinets.

Okay, I googled but couldn't find a pic of a Flying P. What did that look like?

The Flying "P" was a custom built instrument (I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of the luthier) that resembled a flattened, angular explorer. It was extremely elongated in the body and much narrower than a normal explorer shape. And the angles were sharper. I only saw one picture of it and it was in a Guitar Player Magazine over 20 years ago. I've got all the back issues, but will have to do some looking to find it.

Which pic? the bottom one that looks kinda like an Explorer? I would think that was...y'know...his Hamer (or whoever) Explorer. Other than that, I see a Les Paul and a Strat (assumign I'm looking at the right redne...uhh...guy in the group shots.

That last pic is the Flying P.
