Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

Are they worth it? I mean they are priced quite hefty, is the difference there or is that rather imaginary? We're talin about good cables in comparison... not 5$ ones.

thanks

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

A lot of people say Monster is overpriced, but I have no complaints. I use them mainly for practice, rehearsals and gigs though. In a recording situation, I may want to be more picky.

Oh, I like their lifetime guarantee, too.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

I've never had a reason to buy anything more expensive than a Spectraflex cable. They have great signal quality and last forever.

Anything more than that...I'd suggest trying first and seeing if you can tell the difference.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

@P.U.H. Yeah but have you had any others for comparison? I mean... they're no doubt good... but are they THAT good?

Good question. Sorry, I went the wrong direction with my response.

Honestly, there are probably other cables out there to be had at equal quality but lower price. However, there's a lot of crap out there as well. For gigging and casual play situations, I'm less interested in noise differences, and more interested in durability. Monsters hold up quite well, and they're not at all what I'd call a noisy cable.

Again, I like the lifetime guarantee that comes with Monster too.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

I've had some pretty bad experiences with monster cables. I've had maybe about 4-5 go bad on me. Granted this was in the early 2000s. I don't know if they've gotten better or what but I steer clear. I bought a couple planet waves cables over a year ago because I was sick and tired of broken cables. The Planet Waves have done really well so far.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

@P.U.H.: Ok sounds reasonable... actually... I want a good, silent cable taht is durable and has great signal quality... so... I demand everything. I think I might get myself a set of those (Guitar to Pedals - Pedal Patch - Pedals to Amp).

@Rowan: Heard the except same thing you tell about the Monsters about PW cables... quite often actually. So I'm not getting the PWs...

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

i have george l's .225 and .155, monster std 100, 500 jazz, 500 bass, and studio 1000, whirlwind, planet waves, cbi gold rush, livewires, mogami, and a decent number of other cables and have done some minimal testing.

the monster studio 1000 is a fantastic cable. loud, full, quiet, perfect except its really thick and heavy and its ferociously expensive. best sounding cable i own but the most ungainly to use since it is so fat and heavy.

the monster jazz is almost as good but doesnt quite have the same detail. also thinner and less expensive. a great all around cable.

the george l's is great but isnt as punchy or fat as either of the monsters mentioned above. really like these too.

the rest of them are all decent cables but not as good as the above three. i have tried the monster rock and i didnt really care for it, was ok but compared to the jazz (which is a little more $) it sounded brittle and thin. ymmv

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

Thanks for the comparison jeremy... I think I'll just try both the monster Jazz and Rock at my guitar fence because they should have em both in stock. They also have the Studio, but that's even twice the price of the normal ones (Jazz and Rock cost the same here if I remember correctly) which is a bit too sick for me and my fuzzed out rig.

Edit: Ok looked it up... the jazz is just a few € more... which is irrelevant.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

The Monster Rock cables aren't THAT expensive... c'mon. I mean Spectraflex is not that much less than a Monster Rock cable.

I've read something a while back abuot durability of cables. George L's being the easiest to break, and Spectraflex being the toughest.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

@supernosher

Well compared to "normal premium" cables... they are. I mean not obscenely pricey, but I gotta start thinking if it is worth it.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

Well I just picked up a few, so I obviously think they're worth it. I bought only the length I needed, because the longer the cable the more tone suck you get.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

I've been using Whirlwind Leader cables since the mid 80s. I can't imagine another cable being better for the money. I bought a 10 footer in 1986 and it just crapped out on me a year and a half ago. And it was used, believe me. I take care of my stuff, but still...

Right now, I'm using a 15 ft WW Leader Elite. Same as the Leader with a cloth cover and gold plated plugs. I've never tried Monster, but I haven't had a reason to.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

@HighGain

None of the dealers here is carrying Whirlwind cables unfortunately, so I won't be able to try those.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

Didn't even look at your locale, bro. Yeah, that could be a problem if no one near you is carrying them, and getting one shipped from the states or UK would probably be more $$ than the cable itself.

Sorry man. Thought I was helping. LOL.

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

I'm sorta biased against monster cable - but most of that is becuz of my experience buying Monster cable products when I was building my home theater system. I know A/V cables aren't the same as guitar cables, but I've always found that monsters were more expensive and no more better than the competition at similar price points/quality. Shop around and you'll probably find a better cable for cheaper than monster.

I'm currently using Spectraflex cable - I have been for almost 10 years. I highly recommend them. I especially like them becuz you can customize your cable with rite angles, silent jacks, colors, gauges, etc. They're extremely durable and great sounding. they even lay flat and not coiled like some other brands. I can't think of a single complaint about Spectraflex.

Remember what Tommy Boy said about guarantees?

"Its a guaranteed piece of sh*t"...

Re: Monster Rock cables... are they worth the $$$?

Well yeah... amp cables (to an extent) and hahaha ultra premium HDMI cables don't make a difference... but from my experience, you can quite hear the difference stepping up in guitar cables. But usually, there's a point where the difference becomes inaudible... so I'm just interested if this is already the case with normal "good" cables.
But I think I'll just have to try them in person to really tell... it's a good thing my local dealer lets you quite crank the stuff in that soundproof test room ;)
