More twang! (Issues with my Telecaster)

Hey guys!

I've been rocking the SD Hot for Tele set in my new Fender Telecaster.

It's a great sounding set, but the bridge pickup is a bit too fat and thick for me. Excellent for heavier sounds but despite not being a vintage enthusiast I'd prefer a tamer, brighter tone. I don't have the original pickups around, so no replacements at hand.

Any obvious tricks for getting some extra snap I could be missing out?

Besides the mandatory technique adjustments, I already dialed the pickup down to the point of output imbalance, and I reclaimed some clarity back but it didn't fully fix things for me. My Tele does have a Joe Barden trem piece with brass saddles and everything, so that should be OK.

My amp does sound in the dark side of things, but my Strat did OK through it and my Tele kinda doesn't. The neck position sounds excellent so I'm not blaming the guitar on this one. I've also steered far away from anything Tubescreamer in my tonal chain, since they only make things worse in this scenario.

I'm also using some fresh EB 10-46 strings and some Tortex picks instead of Jazz III; the Tortex picks sound a bit more snappy.

Any ideas? I think I'll eventually go with something twangier in both positions, but I'll be happy to tweak my way out of this one.

There's a huge difference between 9s and 10s with my thin line. I have an area T hot in one of them that doesn't have much twang either, the antiquity in the other one sounds fantastic

You might try 500k pots..it is a cheap thing to try, in any case.

Stainless steel 9 strings and a 500k - 1M pot maybe. If it were me, I'd just put a broadcaster in and darken it with the tone when I need to.

Kinda what I'm thinking about (the pickup bit)
I've used low output single coils for years and these hotter variants aren't giving the clarity and detail I look for. I already have Invaders and JBs somewhere else!

If I only had two guitars, I'd settle on these, but I can specialize my rig a bit with my current guitar stable.

Re: More twang! (Issues with my Telecaster)

Put a resistor in parallel to ground with the switch lug for the bridge pickup

The size of the resistor depends on the amount of signal you want diverted

Whatever the ohms are on the pickup wind
Match that with the resistor

Is that too much?
Make the resistor larger

Not enough? Smaller

Re: More twang! (Issues with my Telecaster)

That might be it. I really don't wanna mess around with pot values, since the neck's just fine as it is.

Lighter strings could help, but I'd rather stick to solutions for the bridge position.
