Anyone else like these $20 wonders?
A year or so ago i tried a freinds Octonaut. I liked it so i decided to buy a cheap Klon clone to dip my toes befor the plunge. I used it a few time but kept turning the knobs with my foot when id switch it on and off so i pulled it off the board.
Well yesterday i decided to pull it back out and I actually like this cheap little box. I may just keep it and forgoe the expensiola Klones.
A little black tape should stop the knob problem.( I hate MXR style boxes for this reason)

I have one it sounds great, it worked great when I was in the classic rock band. I would suggest PeacePotis, but they would cost more than the pedal.

I've got one of the cheap little mini clones, it sounds really good... I forget which brand it is. NuX maybe?

Ive heard they can be hit or miss. Some can be noisy, mine is not.
Heard they use actual Germanium diodes too.....kinda crazy at this price point.
Think i spent $27 for mine lol seen um as low as $20(maybe those are the rejects????)

I have one and love it. Used it to slam an amp front for while as an "always on" pedal. Well worth the cost IMO, especially if you aren't a Klon fanboy. .

Once the Klon goop was melted, there wasn't anything magical about the Klon circuit, except the BS that surrounded it.

Yea im not a Klon fanboy. I just try different OD pedals periodically allways seeking better.
But yea no way im spending Klon money...thats just stupid.
But seriously I used a SD1 for a long time. Then went to a TC spark booster. Then to a Boss GE7 as a boost and mid boost. Had a DOD 250 Too and a DOD fx50b and a tube screamer a DS1 too.Had a Marshall Gov Nor too( gold one not the black desired one) Tryed Rats bucha stuff. Havent really done much newer stuff JHS Keeley Wampler etc....But outta the old school stuff Ive used this thing just sounds more amp like to me.

I built a Klone from BYOC (Silver Pony). I like mine as an always on, gain up near max pedal. It does what it does, and nothing more, really. I'd think any Klone would do about the same thing. I think the different price points of the Klones out there have more to do with the construction methods than anything else.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were using 1N34A. Those aren't crazy expensive, but at that price point I don't know why. Especially because the diodes don't make too big a difference in a Klon.

From the pictures I see online, it looks like a circuit that has silent revisions every now and then

If you look at the circuit board there is an IC chip right next to the power plug. On older models it is a full sized through-hole opamp, on newer ones it appears to be a SMT component. Now, all this part does is convert the power from 9v to 18v, so it shouldn't really effect the sound. But if they are willing to change a IC chip to keep costs down, theres probably a few things they may have silently changed

Ah gotcha.
I have not taken mine apart nor looked at Gut pics online.
I figured they were all SMT save for the germanium( supposed) clipping diode.

Germanium diodes aren't nearly as goofy expensive as transistors. The 1N34A, which is what that probably is, comes in a pack of 50 on Amazon for $6
