Hey anyone ever hear of these? Music Man RD-112 Fifty
It seems they are kind of hot in the Chicago Blues area.

I have been reading up, it also seems that Clapton used to play Music Man and Stevie Ray Vaughan even did at least once on the Montreaux '85 DVD

It has only 1 of the 12AX7 but 2 of the 6L6 I wonder why??

Anyway just seeing if anyone knew about them.

Wicked little amps, especially for clean and blues stuff. Very reliable. These are best for low gain sounds, and they love single coils.

Wow that was quick :)

have you tried one?

I have nothing to base it on you know, I mean is it like maybe a blues jr kind of amp?? better worse different?

And what is with the 1 pre-amp tube I wonder why only 1

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

It's a PP amp, so two output tubes (those 6L6, the big ones?)...the 12AX7
(the lil one) is the preamp tube, analogous to V1 in a Fender; tone driver and PI are solidstate (IC). The earlier ones had an EL34 output section. They're loud for what they are, kinda/sorta BF sounding, could use a better speaker with some high end. Watch out for rust on the tranny laminations and failures in the front end IC's---problem areas with these amps. Light years ahead of a Blooz Jr...how many of those do you think will still be functioning in 30 years?

I have a 112RD-100-EVM. It's a great amp for loud cleans.

The amps are hybrid in that they have a solid state preamp and tube power amp. The gain tones are livable- not the greatest in the world but not bad.

The 12AX7 is for the limiter.

As for comparisons, I would think silverface Fender.

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

ahh ok thanks guys

i was looking for a smaller tube combo amp and one of these came up on the radar screen

they seem to be cool but i dont know if it is the amp i want as a little tag along take anywhere combo

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

I am not a huge fan of the RD amps (Reverb and Distortion) but over all the MM stuff was solid...lots of guys will tell you that they don't sound very good but some people disagree...

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

It is the limiter? Sorry for the misinfo re 12AX7...I remember all IC preamp (that I had to replace 2 or 3 times), so I was wondering where that came in...

Billy Flynn was using a MM for awhile, I think...pretty dependable toss in the trunk kinda backup amp.

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

I had a Musicman RD-65 Head. It had a S.S. preamp with 2 6CA7's. I liked the way it sounded. It had some cool feature's like a half power switch, good soild verb and outstanding vibrato. But I could never get MY sound out of it?
It may have been a mental block knowing it had a S.S.front end?:13:

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

Been doing research they seem to be pretty good amps...

I believe that SRV used a 212 HD 130 on that gig... There are pictures of it on this web.

Oh yea, Jeff Seal worked on one for me, which has been sold to Guitar Center - Clearlake...

Billy Flynn! I know he gets around but I didn't think I'd see his name around on a board! Also, his wife Mary has a killer blues show on the Green Bay translator station of Wisconsin Public Radio on Tuesday night!

Re: Music Man RD-112 Fifty

Billy is a great player and a really good guy. He played some killer stuff for the Kim Wilson live album (you should have heard some of the things that didn't get on that album---fantastic slide stuff from Billy). Go see him if you get the chance...there's an album coming out this year with him and Pinetop, Willie Smith, Calvin Jones, Cotton, and a few other interesting people.
