However, I think there's a good chance the extra 3/4" will give it a spank injection and I don't want it to be too bright. If it is, I'll just go in and wrap another thousand-or-two turns of 42 PE to add d.c. resistance and bring down the resonant peak. The result will be more output and less high-end.
Man I wish I could go to work and do that. Heck Evan I'd apply for the Sr. Manager position but I don't know if you would call my experience....legitimate marketing. :blackeye: Man It would be so cool to work at SD,

I have never owned something with that style of bridge. I know some of the old les paul jr guitars would suffer from the bridge becoming loose in the mahogony. I don't know if that would be true in Korina.

Sorry that I'm late to this party. I have that wraparound tailpiece in my '95 Hamer USA Archtop Studio. I like the feel of it and haven't noticed any intonation problem.

Congratulations Evan. Please give us a full report once you receive that beauty.

definitely!

even though Hamer has a pretty good factory tour posted on their site, I think it would be interesting to see how they approach doing a one off project

it would be terrific to see a few progress pics

Ask and ye shall receive!

Here's the neck.

hamer_02.jpg

I requested they pick out a very light weight blank. Without the fingerboard, it comes in at 1.19 lbs. This is good. Very good.

Check out the fingerboard.

Can you say "Brazilian Rosewood?"

The neck will now cure for a minimum of three weeks to "normalize" or take its natural set before they radius the fingerboard. This makes certain that if any twist occurs, it will be removed when they curve that beautiful little slab of (pre-ban) South American rainforest.

that's gonna be sweet...no doubt about it...i'm looking into getting a Monaco Elite in the near future and maybe having one custom painted in rootbeer...i played some Hamer's (WoW) and heard AWESOME things about them...but after the shop i go to let me take home their DVD that shows their history and production process......i'm soooo sold on them as a Company and i can't imagine any other guitar manufacturer rivaling how they do business!!!

Sweet! That's one wood type I've never owned, and always wanted to. I've had P-90's, but never the dogear type. I think I'd be inclined to go with 2 pickups, since I love the P-90 neck tone, but I can imagine how great a custom wound SD dogear P-90 would sound in that thing! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Hamers are awesome...enough said. Here's an interesting fact for you...Hamer doesn't level and crown their frets after they install them. I find that astounding, because they have (in my opinion) the best fretwork in the entire industry. Apparently, they are so detailed in getting everything just perfect, that they can install the frets without needing to do any leveling.

I've often wondered why most Korina guitars come in faded yellow finish. I guess they may do that to differenciate it from mahogany, but it would be cool to see Korina in a unique shade.

True, but I'm going for that faded yellow. Hamer was showing them at the NAMM show and they were just soooooooo beautiful.

African white mahogany???? Am I missing something? Is it made out of Limba or, is it bleeched mahogany or, do some people call limba "white african mahogany? Or, are they calling it Korina because of the color of finish? Or, am I over analyzing this way too much? :) :)

Good question. It's Limba. And here it is!

hamer_04.jpg

That's Jol Dantzig, Hamer's founder, holding what looks like a very nice hunk of premium Limba. As you can see, they've already cut the outside shape of the guitar and the control cavity has been routed as well.

According to Jol, in about another week, I'll get to see the finished body routing and contouring. As you can see, it's a one-piece body, in a nice light color, with uniform grain. Not that I would expect anything less from Hamer.

How cool is this?

Arfican Mahogany IS Limba wood...it comes in a dark colour ("Black"), and a light ("White") colour. "Korina" is Gibsons trade name for the Colour of the 58 V's, Explorers, and Moderne's...the color Gibson is talking about when they say "Korina" is a light honey colour over a white african mahogany body...bleached mahogany with the same honey colour can look close to a real piece of limba, but IMO NOTHING sounds like Limba wood, no matter what colour it is! :laugh2:

Here's my current favorite pic of an example of black limba, it's got me all psyched up for my next project :saeek:

Re: My G.A.S. - Hamer Special Korina Jr. - PICS!

From what I understand, Limba is African White Mahogany and it comes in two colors: uniformly cream, pale yellow; or grayish brown sometimes with nearly black, irregular streaks. It's the nice, pale yellow stuff with no streaks or knots that's the hardest stuff to find.

Hamer doesn't use the streaked wood, even though it comes from the same tree as the pale stock. You'd die if you know what they do with all the streaked stuff they refuse to use. I'll give you a hint: it gets cold in the Winter in New Hartford, CT and some of the Hamer factory employees have wood burning stoves.
:firedevil

Pretty guitar, FretWire. Dave McNaught does some fine work. And he's certainly doing some interesting stuff with streaked Limba.

The name Korina is Gibson's invention. It refers to the wood, not the finish. Those original Gibson guitars were just sprayed with clear lacquer. Back when they were made, they were very light in color, but now they've all yellowed to the shade that most people (including Hamer) refer to as "Vintage Korina" or "Korina Yellow."

I hope that helps.
