My Gretsch Goal

Re: My Gretsch Goal

They're all awesome, just comes down to what you want

I agree the painted f-holes are kind of cheesy, but they DO help with feedback

You may want to look for one with tv jones pickups though, they're basically THE pickups to have in your gretsch and sound fantastic enough to merit the $120 price tag--so much so that I've considered putting them in pretty much all of my other guitars at one point in time or another

Also, the rocking bar bridges are AWESOME, they should replace TOM's altogether, in my opinion. Proteus over at gretschpages.com makes some aftermarket ones matched to the radius of the fretboard, you can get one made of steel, aluminum, or copper, and he was nice enough to post clips of all the different ones for comparison. I ended up with an aluminum one on mine for a little more chime, but I've been lusting after a copper one bad. After you put one on in place of the TOM you can immediately notice a difference--better tuning stability, acoustically MUCH louder, sustain seemed to improve a bit, and of course all of the tonal benefits.

Re: My Gretsch Goal

I had an Electromatic Gretsch for a bit. Loved it, but I bought a floor model and it just wasn't working out. Had to return it and wound up going another route.

The TV Jones suggestion is a good one. IMHO, and many others, TV's pickups are by far the best pickups available to really capture that "Great Gretsch Sound."

Have you checked out the Reverend Horton Heat or Brian Setzer signature models? They're basically souped up 6120s. A little more style, I think. And TV's!

One of the Setzer models is available left-handed; the Rev is not.

There's a big price jump when you go up to the Setzer. It has features that I'd be interested in (TV Jones pickups), features that I'm not interested in (locking tuners), and features I am indifferent to (trestle bracing, flame top).

I think I'd prefer to get a fairly standard Gretsch and upgrade later on if necessary. That's basically the approach I've taken with every other guitar I own, and it's worked out well for me so far. A pair of TV Classics is $250, which is far less than the difference in price between the 6120 and the Setzer.

Re: My Gretsch Goal

There is a 62 Country(Classic) Gent, w/painted f holes, just like George's, at my local GC
I drool over it every time I go in- one of these days.....

I've always liked Gretsch and I like white falcon double cuttaway's. I think you will be very pleased

Re: My Gretsch Goal

Told you that you'd change your mind before you saved the cash.

Yeah, admittedly I didn't have a clear understanding of what I really wanted. This is why research is important, kids!

Though to be fair, it's not like I want a Parker Fly now ... I still want a hollow-body Gretsch.

Re: My Gretsch Goal

Kill Jolly, then a few weeks later tell Jonesers chic you saw him talking to some little latina taco seller. Not only can you get a Gretch White falcon, but some killer LP's and amps....

Re: My Gretsch Goal

The number one is a total bad ass guitar IMO - - I'm nowhere near cool enough to pull off owning one of those.

Re: My Gretsch Goal

2: The G6122-1962 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman
(EDIT: removed due to deal-breaking painted-on F holes! Come on!)

Looks to the side...that will be a feedback buster and let you get louder than the open f-hole models. Not that loudness is the whole point, but it helps on the big stages, ya know?
