I started another thread with the info below but, feel it can apply here.
With a few changed, jumpered and removed parts the Windsor preamp can be used as a JCM800 pre. Since a cathodyne PI was used on the Windsor power amp it would take a lot of finagling to convert it to a JCM800 style power amp. I feel the cathodyne PI is what kills the Windsor from achieving a true JCM800 sound.
I'm laying out a new power amp board for the Windsor head based on a JCM800. I will use spade plugs and pins as needed but, plan on removing the 9 pin header and direct connect the boards with better wire. Do you guys think there is a market for something like this? Maybe $25 a board and $50 to $60 stuffed?
If the DSL was exactly what the manual says there wouldn't be a Vintage Modern..
This thread has gone stupid. But the above is a real WTF moment for me. You should probably play a few Marshalls first before talking about them on the interwebz.

I personally believe that in terms of tone the Windsor is right up there with some of the best Marshalls. I have given some evidence too.
Why rather than giving a rational answer to a simple direct question people just resort to personal attacks?
I don't need you to school me about Marshalls. I owned quite a few, I do own a DSL and I played dozens of other Marshalls including Plexis and JCM 800s. I think that in reality things get stupid when people say that DSL's classic channel is identical to Plexy or JCM 800. There are similarities, but the signal chain is completely different and more importantly - transformers are completely different...
The DSL openly sucked
I do own a DSL
I played it side by side with the JCM2000 DSL 100 aThe DSL openly sucked .
When I bought it I had a chance to compare it to the JCM 2000 DSL 100W head.
My VS100 can not only make any sound ever produced by a JCM800, a DSL or a Vintage Modern, but it can smoke ANY tone the Windsor can produce.

I mean, as long as we are saying stupid things….
Usual nonsense and no substance from so many posters.
Apart from owning a DSl I also modded it. Here is a thread about modding a DSL from a few yes back:http://www.marshallforum.com/showthread.php?t=53683
Some might still find it useful. I still have the same nickname - vivanchenko
Love mine. I have got a head version and a 12" Greenback loaded cab. Love it at 7.5 with my tube screamer on the red channel. My favorite demo of the amp: I have no problems making the amp sound like it does in the the demo. Love it. Love it with my Les Paul 60s Classic.
And I am not answering any questions unrelated to the point of the thread which is why exactly one will hate the Windsor if he expects it to sound like a Marshall. Something even remotely coherent and reasonable will do. Once I get the answer I am ready to answer any other questions.
Yes I know... Iam familiar with you on Marshall forum. You make some very interesting DSL comments over there.
