NAD (Friedman Content)

Re: NAD (Friedman Content)

Dave Friedman said he would , and I quote; "Do a Coool Dirty thing" with my Traynor YBA-1a Bassmaster, and for just 500 bones( plus shipping I suppose). I'm guessing it would be a hot Rod Plexi thing, which would be just about perfect for mi. I'm going to do it if I can!

Re: NAD (Friedman Content)

What is it about the Goldfinger 90 that makes you want to sell it? Too loud? Covers the same territory as the 101B?

I actually don't want to sell it, but I don't want to keep any 100w amps around any more. The only 100w amp I'm keeping is my 101B, and I'm considering sending it to Bogner for a 20th mod and 6V6 conversion. Well that might not be 100% true because I have been through all the Bogners and always come back to the 101B. There is no amp in the world like it. It's as unique as an SLO or something. Chance are that I would probably sell it after modding it and then wanting a 101B again. The Goldfinger is absolutely incredible in every way. I love the boost gain trim knob, the reverb, and dual FX loops. It has multiple power options and a magnificent clean channel considering that it's an EL34 amp. However, even though the 101B doesn't have the cleans of the Goldfinger 90, I can get plexi, hotrodded Marshall, and balls-out thrash with my 101B. The Goldfinger is brighter with a deep low end and a more, open, less compressed vintage sound. Even thought they're completely different amps, the 101B covers a lot of the same ground but with more gain, compression, darker, and with thick low mids.

If he told you that then jump on it before the opportunity disappears. However, while I think of Traynor as a solid brand that is superior to many Chinese or Mexican made amps, it doesn't strike me as a premier brand. Wouldn't you want to take advantage of the opportunity to get a really badass amp modded by him?

Re: Carol Ann Hs-2

Re: Carol Ann Hs-2

Just my 2 cents because I also coincidentally have a Goldfinger (45 watt) and used to have the Carol Ann OD3r.

First, the Goldfinger is about as good an amp as anything out there. Very versatile. Sparkling clean Ch1, driven Plexi on CH2. Overall, hard amp to beat.

I used to have the Carol Ann OD3r, but sold it by accident (long story, but I didn't really want to get rid of it). The OD3r clean is DELICIOUS, and any pedal sounds good into it. The Drive channels are very "dumblesque", lots of bottom end. Even at 35 watts or so, the OD3r is LOUD.

My only reason for even looking elsewhere than my Bogner Goldfinger is the size. It's a monste - head is 42 lbs and cab is 47. So, when Carol Ann offered a small combo, I was curious.

I just ordered one new. It says 18 watts 6V6, and takes 6L6 at 30 watts. So, it seems on paper the ideal amp.

Here's my thoughts on the HS-2 after playing it for a few days:

1. Not much headroom on the clean channel. I even switched out 6L6s and still a little crunchy. Even at level 3-4, it's breaking up. Don't get me wrong, the breakup is very nice sounding, but it leaves me no room for my pedals to do the job. The OD3r took ANY pedal and made it into gold, whilst this amp only sounded good with SOME of my pedals.

2. Not nearly the same sparkling clean sound as the OD3r (and the OD2, which my brother has, and sounds the same on Ch1).

3. Channel 2 on the HS-2 is pretty close to the OD3r, but sounds a little flat, not quite enough bite for my taste. Same bottom end growl, though.

4. Surprisingly not "boxey" sounding, like most combos are. Not quite as full as a separate cab, but pretty darn close.

So, this amp is going back, and I am going to try the new Satin, which has more headroom, unless I can find another used OD3r, which I have been unsuccessful in doing since I sold mine.
