Re: NAD (Friedman Content)
nice beaver
Pink Taco, Brown Eye, Dirty Shirley, etc... I don't know if Dave Friedman is a sexual deviant or what but that guy sure can build an amp.
I love Friedman's amps. I finally got to play one and it was beyond what I expected. A cool little history lesson: Dave Friedman 'started' by hanging out with and 'bugging' Bruce Egnater when he was younger. Bruce essentially lit the flame lol. I found that out and thought it was pretty cool. Even during my amp class, a young kid came in out of nowhere and Bruce helped him out with a broken pedal he was building.
Your amp collection makes me jealous lol!
Nothing to be jealous of really. I'm just swapping out my 100w amps for lower powered amps. I used to think it was best to use amp distortion, but these days I'm realizing that there is a certain way to juice the power tubes and use pedals to achieve your tone. High gain, compressed channel switchers are awesome but they're mostly too high powered for my use. I probably play a few covers in a bar maybe twice a year. About the only playing out I mainly do is the occasional band practice. I accepted the reality that I will never be a guitar god so I just want to keep a comfortable mini studio in my home and try to make at least a few good songs in my lifetime.
Unfortunately even though there are a lot of options for low power amps, they're mostly either cheaper Chinese made amps or expensive boutiques that feature single channels. An amp has to have enough power to play a small venue and cut through easily, yet juice the tubes with a real good master volume for quieter applications. That's why I'm going to get a Carol Ann HS-2.
In fact, I've become a real big fan of big tubes in lower power amps. The Marshall SL5 sounds good and it's 5w with a single EL34. The Carol Ann HS-2 features 2 6L6's running at 25w (can use 6V6 at 16w). I never seem to be quite satisfied with 6V6 or EL84 even though they sound quite good. I just like the sound of bigger tubes.
My amp goal is to narrow my collection down to only 4 amps. I will keep my 101B, Port City Pearl, Blackstar Series One 50, and acquire a Carol Ann HS-2. I'm going to sell my Marshalls and Goldfinger 90. Four amps is more than enough for a player like me, but I like a variety. There are so many great sounding amps out there and I wish I could be like Joe Bonamassa and own them all, but the truth is I can't justify owning so much gear.
