Need humbucker recommendations for metal

Old and new metal, I have a Jackson Dinky I wanted to upgrade, I need passive humbuckers that work well with Laney, Diezel, Mesa, Krank, and Peavey heads. No holds barred. Music wise I'm thinking of playing 90s metal to some present day stuff-Metallica, Slipknot, Bullet for my Valentine, The Sword etc

Feedback appreciated.

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

Lol. You said metal, metal doesn't play on the neck haha.

'59 old, or Pegasus new for a neck pup.

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

Distortion set or Invader set.

For me it would depend on exactly which dinky model we're talking about and how it was setup (strings/gauges/tuning ect..), also would depend on what the total rig is giving me and what it needs more of.(rigs plural in your case it sounds)

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

I'd probably inject the Distortion set in that guitar. Great clarity while still having some juice and thickness.

The Invaders really shine in those maple/alder/ebony MIJ Dinky-pros. That's one of the best combos I've ever heard.

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

Distortion set, '59/Duncan custom, Sentient/Nazgul

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

I play a lot of similar music. For SD my two favorites are the stock SH-5 and Black Winter. I went through a lot of iterations with the SH-5, big ceramic, A8, hybrid with JB coils, etc. And the stock SH-5 is just......right. And the Black Winter simply rules an is a very versatile pick up.

Non SD, I love the PRS Tremonti, Suhr Aldridch and Motor City Afyawu.

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

I play a lot heavier than the stuff you mentioned and I use a WLH set in a Les Paul. Find a set of pickups that have the tone and responce you are looking for first. Gain can always be added later.

this guy is asking the same question: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/sho...our-Duncan-Bridge-Neck-Pickup-Combo-For-Metal

if you can talk about what pickups you have tried and what you'd like more/less of, it can help people give options
Tried Jackson J90c and j80c. I kinda like the j80s. Also I haven't tried the Sd JB. I have tried the sh5 on another guitar, but that was in a modern rock context, not metal.I usually use my SD quarter pounder for metal on another guitar , sounds pretty good and cuts through.

check out Dustie Waring's new signature set. it's a good pair of hot rod humbuckers and he's down with the Mesa stuff (based on post #1).

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

If your talking non sd pups check out the BK Juggernaut or Rebel Yell too.

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

I have to say this, and I have said it before. This is for the benefit of you youngsters. When WE (I mean my generation) started playing thrash and other forms of metal we played on whatever we could afford. You are not going to get metal out of a pickup. Metal is the way you play your guitar. Grinding that axe until it falls apart and crumbles in your hands. I had a screwdriver or soldering iron on my guitar after every gig. Yes, there are a lot of great "metal" pickups out there with cool names. That will not give you a metal tone. A metal tone comes from attitude, inspiration, and perspiration. The best pickup for metal is the one in your guitar right now.

But...... Black Winter

Re: Need humbucker recommendations for metal

High-Output/Distortion Class pickups (DiMarzio SuperD, Duncan Distortion, et al) - those above 12K, came about as a means to push the input signal at the front of the amp when pedals alone either couldn't, wouldn't, or didn't do it well enough. While Randy Rhoads' recorded lead tones pretty much set the standard at the time, his rhythm tones both sucked and blew at the same time because he was using a distortion-class pickup through a Distortion pedal (not Overdrive, but actual Distortion), and had the amp raging. It was a wall of white noise.

Meanwhile, Tony Iommi was still chugging away on P-90s and PAF-voiced pickups in the 8K range or below, and delivering killer crunch and wicked balls.

I mean, Into The Void, man. That opening lone-guitar riff is still the heaviest thing recorded by one guitar.

If you're using a JCM800 and nothing between the guitar and the amp except a cable, you might want to look at a Distortion Class pickup. For anything else, go with a medium-high (10K tops) pickup and you'll have more clarity in your chords, more punch in your palm mutes, and more bite in your solos, especially if your amp already delivers the goods and you just use an OD pedal for solos.
