Need some Fender cleanyness

I want some rich Fender cleans... I'd love to have a silverface Deluxe Reverb or something along those lines, but I've only got about $1000 to spend (in the next couple of months) and don't think that kind of bread is going to get me the quality I want. SO, I was thinking about going the RI route. With a speaker upgrade/tube swap I've heard these are pretty promising amps. Any opinions?

I'm open to other non-Fender suggestions, but I just want the sweet creamy goodness you get from Fender-type cleans. PLEASE give other recommendations to find this type of tone.

A couple of other factors:
:cool2:I don't really need a lot of dirt, I'll get that from pedals
:cool2:NEEDS to have reverb
:cool2:Would like it to be sub-50W
:cool2:Needs to be semi-portable... I don't want it to be SO big that after I play out and get it home I DREAD carrying it up the stairs to my music room
:cool2:I'm open to a head/cab deal, but would probably prefer a combo... just keep in mind the price
:cool2: TOOBZ are a must have as well (Sorry, no ULTIMATE Chorus amps)

:thanks:

SF Pro Reverb

Then you might consider a Music Man...RD 65 is a nice combo. Cleany goodness in those amps!!

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

I'm guessing many others will chime in with good suggestions of used or new Fender amps to get that Fender clean sound, but I honestly feel the Traynor YCV40 2x10 I have gets that sound very well, and is $700 new or about $400 used. I've thought of upgrading the speakers in mine but with a 2x12 attached I don't mind them, although I'm sure a set of Emis would roar in one. It's 2x 6L6, has a lead and clean channel with separate EQ, presence and Accutronics spring reverb. I remember reading a GP review of the amp before I bought it saying it's cleans were like that of a Deluxe Reverb and since owning it I've agreed.

clips of it can be heard at: www.supernova.com/Steve-Hanson in any of the recordings with electric guitar.

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

my 2 cents...

Get a used reissue Deluxe Reverb. Replace the speaker with one of the Jensen repops (C12Q is my suggestion). Take the amp to a reputable tech in your area and ask him to remove the 22 uF 500 volt filter caps in the power supply and replace them with 16 uF 475 volt caps. These two changes will get you close enough to the tone of an original BF that most people have a tough time telling them apart. Incidentally, I have done this to a number of Vibrolux Reverb RIs with the same results...the cap change may sound minor but the difference in tone is huge.

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

I'll sell you a Fender Ultimate Chorus for cheap.

It's a solid state 2x12 combo that weighs slightly less than a Ford truck, it has 130 watts of cold transistor power, and the volume knob is broken off (at a volume suitable for Wembley Arena)

but it does have excellent digital reverb.

Bwahahahaha.... I guess I should have listed "TOOBZ" as a must (personal preference I guess)... I'll edit the OP to reflect so

:dot:

On the other hand, I'll give you $15 and a kick in the pants for your ULTIMATE Chorus.... Deal?!

:thanks:

I picked up a 72 SF Super with a replacement speaker for 1K back in Sept. I'm becoming a HUGE fan of a super reverb....funny though, it's the only "high powered" circuit I really care for.

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

Just buy a SF Fender amp...there are all kinds of dels out ther right now and the market is getting softer...

I would adviuse you to stay away from PCB reissue amps sunply because the quality is not there IMHO...I'd much rather buy an early SF and then over a year or so put some money back into it and rock it for 40 more years...

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

An amp I've been drooling over seems to fall within your price range. a '65 reissue deluxe with a celestion gold.....:naughty: I've preferred alnico mags in the speakers ever since i got my super reverb, but I prefer the deluxe overall in terms of wattage, portability, and tone. This would be a KILLER amp, you could get it for around 5 and the speaker is a few bills, that'll leave you under a grand.

"Take the amp to a reputable tech in your area and ask him to remove the 22 uF 500 volt filter caps in the power supply and replace them with 16 uF 475 volt caps."

Tell me what exactly this would mean in terms of sound... and what's a BF? Is this an expensive/difficult operation? Just wondering what exactly that'd do to the sound.

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

BF= Black Face
SF= Silver Face

Fender amps from different eras used different color face plates on the front (black and silver).

Someone else will have to explain how changing the capacitors will affect the sound.

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

Oh yeah I know the difference between faces just wasn't aware of the abbreviations. And yeah I'd appreciate if someone could briefly summarize what kind of effect different capacitors would have.

Yeah, it's a lot of money to me. Basically I'm selling a saxophone towards the end of the year that's worth about a grand and that's where the cash is coming from. BUT I really want a nice clean amp that'll give me everything I need for a while... and when you look at it that way $1K isn't all that much in the amp world!

Re: Need some Fender cleanyness

orange reverb twin (aka hustler combo), hunt low and high and far and wide :D

fender twin circuit with EL34s.. only downside is they're heavy (mines on wheels).. 60w, valve driven reverb and tremolo, incredible cleans!
