Pink Floyd, The Black Strat
A History of David Gilmour's Black Fender Stratocaster

This is a great book with a ton of photos of Gilmour's infamous "Black Strat" along with a few other guitars he's used over the years. It's written by Phil Taylor, Gilmour's tech since 1974, so finally we are getting the story from the man who has "cared for, handled, dismantled, modified, adjusted, restrung, polishedtuned, plugged in, tested and handed over to David on countless ocassions throughout the years." Too cool! All the internet rumours, here-say and half truths can all be clarified and confirmed.

Gilmour has actually owned three "Black Strats" over the years, although the first was stolen in 1970, and the replacement was the one that became the "Black Strat". This one is on it's 6th neck, originally coming with a 4 bolt, maple capped neck. It seems Gilmour was not immediately drawn to this specific guitar, and for at least a year after it's purchase he used any of several Strats, including a sunburst and a white one. (Pompeii was recorded with the Black one) He eventually replaced the neck of the Black Strat with the rosewood neck from the Sunburst, and at this point it became his go-to guitar. It has had quite a few looks and modifications over the years including:

-toggle to add the Neck Pickup was done on two ocassions
-XLR jack was installed on the edge radius below the output jack to feed the hottest signal possible to a fuzz, then return to the guitar to use the volume as master volume
-body was routed and pickguard was modded to accept a full sized Gibson HB between the bridge and mid pickups
-Dimarzio bridge pickup was added in '76
-Bridge P/U was replaced by a Duncan in '79
-It was routed for a Kahler, then later repaired

Many necks have been used on it including two Charvel necks with Fender logos.

This is an incredible book for Gilmour fans. I believe it's only available at www.theblackstrat.com and between the currency conversion and shipping it's quite an expensive book for US residents, but I knew I had to have it.

Finally I'll leave you with the opening quote of the book:
"I told Phil that I wasn't interested. It seems a daft idea to me, writing a book about an ordinary guitar that I bought at Manny's"

Here is the Humbucker:

And something I think we'll all find interesting. :)

Omg dude. I worship Gilmour and that strat. Mine looks just like it. I think I'll order a copy. To me, that guitar is the greatest icon of rock.

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"

Gilmour's stuff was a factor in wanting one of these in a Hamer. I cant decide which I like more. Both are Duncan loaded.

:notworthy :headbang: :headbang::headbang:

Wow!

Those SSL-1's, adjusted for inflation to 2006, would cost $107.48 each! And the SSL-3 and SSL-4 would cost $125.39 each!

Mr. Duncan has really lowered prices since then. I guess having an awesome business, and steady business for how ever many years it's been can do that.

Duncan was probably a small maker back then so, the prices adjusted for inflation are probably on par with other small boutique makers now.

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"

He said he got that guitar at "Manny's", i've been there. Coolest music store on the planet. It's in NYC off of times square. I've heard of a lot of famous guitarists going there. check it out if you're ever in the big apple.

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"

I think you'll enjoy it. I was a little disappointed when I saw how thin it was, but every page is pure gold.

Manny's has to be one of the most famous music stores. Isn't that where Jimi dug through boxes of Fuzz Faces to find the perfect ones?

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"

Maybe 70-80 or so? It's full color, glossy, it's very nice, but for some reason I thought it would be thicker. (I don't know what else could be included, it's very thorough about the Black Strat)

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"

i believe Gilmores quote abouit it being an Ordinary guitar.... Gilmour said it was his experimental guitar and any new mods or anything interesting he'd try out in that guitar... which i guess is why it's been butchered... I never knew it had a middle humbucker... what year was that? Before Darkside?

Does the book show any close up photos of the trem area repair

i have some 1980 Wall stage photos of Gilmores set up and he had 2 black strats on stage... and an LP....

oddly my Black MIM strat that is now with 57 reissue pickups and a black guard has also been my experimental guitar... mine has been routed out greatly under the guard as well... mine had 3 full sized humbuckers at onetime... later i stuck the black SSS guard with white plastic parts.... had Duncans in it.... then i found the 57 reissued PU's in a wrecked guitar, put them in and it sounds pretty good...

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"

The Humbucker was in there during the time that they were playing Dark Side live as 'Eclipse'. It was only in there a short time, after which I think he went to the black guard. (The second Black Strat was a 3 bolt maple neck that was a backup and I think was set up for slide)

Unfortunately, other than the early Tele, suburst strat and white strat, he doesn't really cover the other guitars in the 70's. No talk of the LP or the Animals era Tele. Even the Red EMG strat is pretty brief. It is a book about the black one though...

i have some 72 Bootlegs on LP and those early Dark Side Eclipse shows were neat... the instrumental they did instead of On The Run was interesting... I have the BBC Brighton 72 show, and a few different lp's of the Hollywood Bowl 72 shows.... one is called Pink Floyd Crackers... with a cover picture of a box of crackers!

Re: New Book: "Pink Floyd, The Black Strat"
