Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!
I had to take a nap to keep from puking when I read the responses - thought I was just being heckled by the forum bros until the consensus became clear.
That is indeed the Craig's List ad. I have the seller's email, phone, and car description, but he had me meet him at a Barnes and Noble lot, which is unsettling now. His story was that he bought it very recently from a Slash wannabe who replaced the plastic tuners with Grovers, and also upgraded some of the hardware (hence the Gibson speed knobs) which are indeed on backwards.
The "Standard" on the truss rod cover is seen on some Standards and not on others. Furthermore, the serial number which I looked up points to a 2003 LP Standard. I'm no Les Paul expert but optimistically, the body, neck, and headstock pass. There is very shallow chip in the body which exposes the mahogany, meaning the paint job is not a heavy laminate coat. I've owned LP knockoffs before and this guitar sounds very loud, sustains, and feels solid. I'm very satisfied with it, but to the part of the mind that says "if you like it, keep it" - no knock-off is worth $600.
The only thing that seems off to me is the wiring cover, which seems rotated instead of along the curve of the body.
Here's the deal: I have an online paper due very soon, so I will have to block this out momentarily. If it is a 2003, the pickups must be Burstbuckers, so I will remove them and see. I can't thank you guys enough for having my back, but I am respectfully undecided. If I have substantial reason to believe it is fake, I will contact the seller and authorities tomorrow.
