Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Im a Fender man myself Saggy and that guitar would have fooled me to bro. Looks legit to me.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

Check in with us Saggy! Dont go too far under. Everyones been swindled somewhere along the way. I just bought a 12,000 Toyota truck that I hear funny engine noises in now.Im waiting to find out from my mechanic if it needs an engine rebuild or not.Ive never bought a used car and youve never bought a used Gibson. !2,000 is a screw of a lot more of a burn than 600.00.I dont know yet how much that friggin heap is worth with a bad engine but it aint much.Im hopeing it just needs a good Valve job , but somethings definitly wrong. So, learn from it , and next time ask the boys here before pouncing on something like that. We coulda saved you a lot of money.

best of luck getting it sorted man!

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

i take it EBAY is also ripe with these cheap knock offs as well....

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

I had to take a nap to keep from puking when I read the responses - thought I was just being heckled by the forum bros until the consensus became clear.

That is indeed the Craig's List ad. I have the seller's email, phone, and car description, but he had me meet him at a Barnes and Noble lot, which is unsettling now. His story was that he bought it very recently from a Slash wannabe who replaced the plastic tuners with Grovers, and also upgraded some of the hardware (hence the Gibson speed knobs) which are indeed on backwards.

The "Standard" on the truss rod cover is seen on some Standards and not on others. Furthermore, the serial number which I looked up points to a 2003 LP Standard. I'm no Les Paul expert but optimistically, the body, neck, and headstock pass. There is very shallow chip in the body which exposes the mahogany, meaning the paint job is not a heavy laminate coat. I've owned LP knockoffs before and this guitar sounds very loud, sustains, and feels solid. I'm very satisfied with it, but to the part of the mind that says "if you like it, keep it" - no knock-off is worth $600.

The only thing that seems off to me is the wiring cover, which seems rotated instead of along the curve of the body.

Here's the deal: I have an online paper due very soon, so I will have to block this out momentarily. If it is a 2003, the pickups must be Burstbuckers, so I will remove them and see. I can't thank you guys enough for having my back, but I am respectfully undecided. If I have substantial reason to believe it is fake, I will contact the seller and authorities tomorrow.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

You have a substantial reason to believe it's a fake, because it is.

I'm not giving you a hard time, because 3 years ago I wouldn't have known any better either. It's subtle differences that make it not a Gibson. And it's not a bad looking guitar by any means.

But if they did that poorly a job mimicking a real Gibson, then I can't imagine they did an adequate job with wood selection, or neck construction, etc. Are you even sure it has a truss rod!?

You need to take this to the higher level now, as it's fresh. Waiting will only cause problems.

Believe me, lots of us are unhappy about this (I was pretty depressed about it). But you gotta do something now. It'll make us, and yourself, feel better.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

that's a definitely 100% sure fake man. even with the small pics on the first post you can tell its a fake. the controls are in the wrong position(the most obvious, the only real LP with that knob orientation is the Neal Schon Sig), the headstock shape is way off, funky cutaway shape etc.
if you still don't believe us, call Gibson and check the Serial number. act now bro.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

I know you guys are right. Must be a form of denial. I called the seller, no response. Time to get the police involved.

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

yeah bro, definitely...and that headstock is way off...notice on the real gibson that the two middle humps of the "open book" are noticeably higher than the outside edges? on yours it's the opposite. Good luck bro!

that was the very first thing that made me assume it was a fake from the second i saw it... looks like they "tried" to base the headstock shape on a 70's LP but messed up... it's a little closer to the headstock on 70's Gibsons but not quite... the neck's back heel at the body joint is not right either

the other thing i noticed fast was the small cut away body horn not being shaped right...

i'd be surprised if the Police could do anything.. in a case like this i'd wonder if they would say buyer beware.... i may be wrong

I'm afraid you're probably right bro. They're trying to reach him now via phone, but the first thing they said was to contact Craig's List.:grumble:

Re: New gear - Nearly stole an LP Standard! Don't hate!

The thing that is a dead giveaway are the frets. Gibson frets never go on top of the binding. The binding has "nibs" that are at the end of the frets. Go look at some pictures of real Gibson fretboards to see what I mean.

Unless this guitar had been re-fretted, but why would it on a lightly used 2003?

I hate to see this happen. I bought all of my LP's and SG's before this **** of forgeries started happening. Before long the forgers will copy the nibs as well, making it really hard to tell.

really?.... this will be interesting... unless he made the guitar he was just selling a used item... that may mean a hell of a lot in court...
