the guy who invented fire
Fuzzy. Guitars
Well...not what most of you think about when you think about guitar but I just got my hands on a smokin' lap steel!!
I'd been looking on and off for a while for a cool lap steel and was having issues finding just want I wanted when a forum brother and guitar guru stepped in. When we started talking I though he had an old steel he wanted to get rid of or maybe he knew a guy that did but his idea was for him to build me a lap steel...and he did!
We took inspiration for the body shape from an old Magnatone steel from the 50's but decided to use swamp ash for the bulk of the body and used a Tele bridge pickup (Seymour Duncan Vintage 54 Lead) so it sort of has a bit of Fender in it's DNA as well.
So, the bulk of the body is swamp ash, the end of the neck and headstock are mahogany the fretboard is lacewood trimmed in snakewood the headstock overlay and top of the body are maple (with some real nice figuring!) and the bridge and nut are 3 layer laminated snakewood/rosewood/snakewood.
He went string thru body and direct mounted the pickup for maximum fatness...and let me tell you...it can do fat quite nicely but being a Telecaster pickup if you back it off you can get real sweet twangy tones too!
Enough talking...here are some quick and dirty pics I snapped after playign it for several hours straight!
Here is a quick outdoor shot:
And last but not least...a headstock shot so you all know who the forum brother and guru is...
That's right!!!
Frank Falbo is the mastermind behind this little gem!
It's truly a great sounding and very well made instrument and I'm excited and honored to own it.
