New "guitar"...

Well...not what most of you think about when you think about guitar but I just got my hands on a smokin' lap steel!!

I'd been looking on and off for a while for a cool lap steel and was having issues finding just want I wanted when a forum brother and guitar guru stepped in. When we started talking I though he had an old steel he wanted to get rid of or maybe he knew a guy that did but his idea was for him to build me a lap steel...and he did!

We took inspiration for the body shape from an old Magnatone steel from the 50's but decided to use swamp ash for the bulk of the body and used a Tele bridge pickup (Seymour Duncan Vintage 54 Lead) so it sort of has a bit of Fender in it's DNA as well.

So, the bulk of the body is swamp ash, the end of the neck and headstock are mahogany the fretboard is lacewood trimmed in snakewood the headstock overlay and top of the body are maple (with some real nice figuring!) and the bridge and nut are 3 layer laminated snakewood/rosewood/snakewood.

He went string thru body and direct mounted the pickup for maximum fatness...and let me tell you...it can do fat quite nicely but being a Telecaster pickup if you back it off you can get real sweet twangy tones too!

Enough talking...here are some quick and dirty pics I snapped after playign it for several hours straight!

That's right!!!

Frank Falbo is the mastermind behind this little gem!

It's truly a great sounding and very well made instrument and I'm excited and honored to own it.

Re: New "guitar"...

Seriously ultra cool! I'd love to get my hands on a decent lap steel, and this one is killer!

What's the story with the two jacks? Piezo bridge?

Re: New "guitar"...

I have no idea about lap steels but it looks pretty darn great, congrats on your new "guitar" man, enjoy her in good health!!! :headbang:

Re: New "guitar"...

That's gorgeous. Normally a lapsteel isn't something I'd take a great deal of notice of, and then of course you think Dave Gilmour. I'm interested...

Re: New "guitar"...

Lap steels are interesting guitars. I don't remember seeing any other posts about them. Yours is gorgeous. I picked up one myself with a P-90. One day I'll get the hang of it. :biglaugh:

My buddy built himself a lap steel out of leftover wood from his basement renovation and spare parts he had lying around. Amazing how great it sounds!

Re: New "guitar"...

That looks incredible, I would learn to play lap steel if I had that one! Congrats.

Thanks so much!

Thanks, it really is a great instrument...I wish I could do it justice but it's not as easy as it looks!

The 2 jacks...plug your typical guitar into the steel then out of the steel into the pedal board and or amp then with the little toggle switch I can shut off the steel and play guitar and the steel is muted...no un plugging and re plugging and no A/B boxes.

It was Franks idea and I love it and as an added bonus when only the steel is plugged in it's a mute switch.

Thank you sir

abso-effing-lutely!

YEP!

RIGHT!

David has an interesting steel style...not sure anybody could ever cop his style really but he's a fine player!

Re: New "guitar"...

Is there anything Frank can't do?

I'm starting to wonder that myself!

My dad plays Dobro and is damn good at it, I've always wanted to learn something like it but a typical bluegrass Dobro just doesn't fit in with my style of blues and rock but if I work at it I might be able to make this beast work in just fine!

Thanks!

Getting a steel was the easy part...learning to work it is a different story!

I sort of thought that since I played slide guitar it would be an easy transition...I was dead wrong!

Ah, I get it. Very clever!

Re: New "guitar"...

That's an interesting bridge, with a fret wrapped around it. I wondered what kept the strings from sliding till I noticed the notches in the wood.

I'd trust Frank's ability to build a lap steel partially based on the fact that he's a very accomplished lap steel player. It makes me wish I still had my custom made Chandler w/dogear P-90.
