New Guitar!

Re: New Guitar!

First of all, if YOU are happy with the deal, then thats all that matters.. Second, FWIW, I think you scored big! Congrats!

Re: New Guitar!

That's a nice score and a sweet looking guitar.;) I love the look of the mini-hums and I bet they sound good also. Some people might not go for the multiple piece look like your top, but I think it looks pretty good. I bet it weighs pretty heavy being a Norlin era LP. I have a friend who is a pretty amazing guitar player. His weapon of choice is a Gibson LP Deluxe. He's really into the mini-hums also and feels that they cut though the mix better than most pickups. Congrats on the score and BTW, I agree that case is for an SG since I own an SG myself. I found it very hard to fit an SG into an LP case.:headache:

Re: New Guitar!

Thanks fellas...

:)

BloodRose, I loved it. I have a thing for honeyburst pauls.

RorySquire, the tone is great. It is somewhere in between my tele and the p90's that I let go. Of course, these are stock pickups. The guitar is not light, but definitely lighter than what I was expecting, which I think is a cool thing. It has a sharp and concentrated tone with crazy sustain. And it is pretty loud. So overall even though I was a bit skeptical before trying this out (pancake body, maple neck, and mini HBs you know) I ended up loving it. The neck could have been a bit thicker though, I kinda like them 50's baseball bat necks.

There is some work to be done. Some minor stuff but still... The saddles are completely unusable. I gotta change them. In fact I dunno if I can change them saddles without changing the whole bridge (Nashville bridge you know, not like the ABR-1 where I can "lift" them screws fastening the saddles. Anyways, let me ask.

Can I change the saddles on a Nashville bridge (without changing the bridge)?

The caps are ****. I gotta change them. The pots look alright, the heads of the height adjustment screws of the neck pickup are almost fully stripped. Gotta change them. And some polish wouldn't hurt you know.

About the case... The fit is tight but it works. So ... Mine is sorta curiosity about whether or not it is its original case. you know.

I'm glad you really like the mini-hums. I bought a Gibson Original Mini-Humbucker for a guitar project and I bought the pickup because of my friend. I can't wait to get it fully functional. There's a member over at MLP forum who swears by Norlin Les Pauls. Just how you described the crazy sustain, he too loves the sustain of these Norllin-era beauties. Maybe the pancake body does have that extra something...who knows.:dunno:

I have an ABR-1 on my SG and a Nashville on my LP Studio. I've taken the ABR-1 apart many times, even though that retaining wire is a pain in the ass to get off.:irate: I don't think you can even get the saddles of the Nashville bridge by the looks of it. I'm looking now on my LP and it looks like you might have to get a new bridge. The only way to get the saddles out of there is to break the adjustment screws and I don't think you want to do that.:23: Anyway, good luck in your restoration of this guitar, even though there's not much to restore. This looks like your new keeper guitar for sure.:)

Re: New Guitar!

Thanks! I appreciate the help!

:)

I measured the bridge and looks like a 74mm bridge would be fine.

This it the bridge that I think of buying is a Schaller GTM-C. Or Gibson's PBBR-10. I think the one on my guitar is a Schaller GTM-C no? BTW Gotoh is a bit cheaper... But still I think I am going to get a Schaller. Any feedback on this?

Here's a Schaller GTM-C bridge with a spacing of 75 mm...that's probably close enough.;) It looks very similar to a Gibson TOM bridge. If it's cheaper than the Gibson PBBR-10, then I'd probably go with this one. Gotoh is another good brand that had a reputation for quality, but that may have changed due to where they are made. I think the Schaller bridge is a winner.:)

Re: New Guitar!

Bosstastic! A good score on the economic side, a really cool vintagey guitar on the aesthetic side, and another option on the tonal side. Triple win!

That is one of the better looking 3-piece tops I've seen. Congrats!

Re: New Guitar!

Fantabulous score! I had two 73 deluxes, and the neck pickup is still one of my favorite tones of all time. Strangely enough, my first had a wonky bridge and I was only 17 when I got it and traded it fairly soon after, and the second was routed out for a humbucker so I never got to really experience the mini bridge. God, that guitar is beautiful. Yeah they're heavy--got a 75 and 80 Norlin era LPs, but they're fantastic imho. Good luck and many, many years of enjoyment wished, my friend.

Thanks. I think I was kinda lucky on this one. Everything sorta worked alright.

:)

You know, as you say he tone is killer. Some of the other 70's that I came across were sorta stiff guitars you know. (Maybe that is precisely why I "came across" those.) But not this one. And the good thing is that it's not heavy. I was expecting it to be heavier. My 95 standard that I let go after 10 years was definitely more heavy. Still the deluxe sounds great. Loud, has tonsa sustain, has this maple tone to it (which is a good thing, owning a very good sounding 03R8).

Re: New Guitar!

Very cool indeed! Love the colour a lot. Now, plug up that Sunface and enjoy that one!

Thanks!

That, my friend, is exactly the plan, once I get this guitar in some good condition. In these parts of the world, getting hold of a Nashville Schaller bridge might be a bit tricky. I have to order it from Germany, and it has to go through customs and all... But anyways, I am determined!

Re: New Guitar!

i KNOW you ain't asking ME what I think about some 70's Les Paul Goodness!?!?!?!?!?!

Maple Neck: The shape, feel and TONE will be awesome for an LP. FAst and bright and comfortable. Also, 3 piece glued = nearly indestructible.

Pancake: If it were a BC Rich, no one would bat an eye. Haters gonna hate. Bah. The pancake, if anything, actually pushes the mids up a a bit towards the treble. A cool thing again, IMO.

Minibuckers: cool. And if you want "more" there is always the Seymourized option!

I started to chub as soon as I saw the three piece top. I knew when it was from....
