New Ho's In The House

Imperator of Indignation
I received my Hotone Eagle's Heart and Vulcan today. These are 5w nano heads with an impedance matching transformer so they can power 4, 8, or 16-ohm speakers. There are also outputs for headphones and an effects loop. So why would someone want a Hotone nano amp? Because sometimes you want a little head.

First impressions: These things are tiny but sturdily built. At first, I plugged them into one of my cabs that have a mix of speakers and I didn't get any output at all and only weak output through the headphone jack. I have a cabinet mixed with two 8 ohm speakers in series + two 16 ohm speakers in series for a combined parallel impedance of around 8/9 ohms. I think the matching transformer doesn't like anything that isn't exactly 4, 8, or 16 ohms and refuses to play if it doesn't get it? Once plugged into a 4, 8, or 16-ohm cabinet it works fine although it isn't real loud. Another oddity is that when first testing them I wasn't getting as much volume as I expected from the demos I had seen. So I plugged my BBE into the effects loop and that was a game-changer. So I suspect the demos have an effects processor in the loop of these amps that are bringing up the signal trength. Both of these amps have really effective tone controls and you can get a wide variation in tones. They also have plenty of distortion so you don't need to run a pedal in front of them. The downside is that they are a bit noisy.

Eagle's Heart:
This amp is supposed to emulate an Engl Savage. The bass and treble response of this amp are really unique and work well for doom, stoner, and thrash. It's very dry, resonant, and growls menacingly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7VITwAEWP8

Vulcan:
This amp is supposed to emulate a Peavey 5150. It has a lot of gain and is more midrange and treble-heavy. It has that taut and fluid character that many modern high gain amps have. It would do well with Swedish Death Metal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5hhSKSVrOQ

The Verdict:
If you're looking for something to play through a cab without waking the entire neighborhood they are worth looking into. However, you need to experiment a bit with them and they take a while to dial in with each guitar. For $50 each, you get a very distinctive sounding amp which really loves a 4x12 cab and you can easily record without killing your neighbor's lawn.

The Future:
If I can find the Freeze B on sale I will probably buy one. That is supposed to sound like a Friedman amp which is a modified Marshall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ozXaaGASDo I also liked the sound of the demo's for the Captain Sunset which is supposed to be a Soldano SLO clone but I think it probably covers the same ground as the Vulcan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu8JyhKXqEQ&t=76s The Heart Attack is also interesting because it's supposed to emulate a Mesa rectifier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZbFX_Aa_H8&t=305s

Cool - several models I’ve never heard of. I almost
bought the heart attack once after playing in a store but it was more like $100 not $50

Very cool I was looking at the purple wind (sounds like some kinda noxious gas attack) for some kinda headphone amp that I don't ever have have to find with tubes for
Looked up some demos that say while it goes for a Plexi sound it's more dark and muddy.
But for $50 and it makes a noise? Well... Maybe still worth a go
Dig the size and features of this series

So would just a jumper in the effects loop fix the level problem? Or do you have to have a processor with some particular buffer?

I wonder what they sound like as a pre-amp into a power section?

Hell yeah bro! Nice review and I dig the humor sprinkled in! Honestly, if I could get a little head like that every day, who knows, maybe I wouldn't be so grumpy all the time...

I have to test one without anything in the loop to see if it's really necessary. Since I planned to use the loop anyways that's not a problem. With the BBE in the loop they are very loud for their size.

I see certain models occasionally on reverb and guitar center used section for ~$59

ive had the frezze b for a bout a year now. i like it ok, but it doesn't sound quite as good as i hoped it would. gotta try this fx loop trick next time i'm rocking it!

In YouTube vids they seem to have the voicing pretty good but seems to lose it with palm mutes on lower strings. I’m a big palm muter so I always hone in on that. I don’t recall the heart attack doing that live.

The tone controls on these little amps are very effective so you can dial in a wide range of tones.

I just got the California Sunset. Some guy on ebay is selling the Hotone amps for $53 and I couldn't help myself. I love this little guy. I put it through my Marshall with the old more 65 sounding 75s and it is punchy, tight, and the tone controls are really responsive. I don't play death metal, but for classic metal, drop tunings, I loved it. I'm very much a tube snob but these amps are just fun. Some guy has a video on youtube where he compared the Heart Attack and a real Dual Rec in the mix and I could not tell the difference between them. When he just played the amps one at a time, you could tell but in a recording it was amazing. I want to get the Mojo Attack which is a Tweed and Dual Rec and see what that sounds like. I'm 57 and would love to be able to just bring a small pedal and a 2X12 on wheels instead of my billion pound (seems like it) Bad Cat combo to gigs. Of course, when I can gig again. Gonna dig out my 4X12 with the V30s and G12H30s X pattern and see what that sounds like. Sweet.

Here it is. at 1:35 is when he does out of the mix.

The Captain Sunset is supposed to sound like a Soldano while the Vulcan is supposed to sound like a 5150. I would think those two would have substantial similarities. I would like to get the Freeze B for a modded Marshall sound. I would like something low gain also but I'm not sold on any of them.

I've been playing the Captain Sunset with different guitars and cabinets and I've come to the conclusion...fun little amp, that's about it? I haven't recorded with it yet, that will come soon. It seems to like the 8 ohm 2X12 cab I described above better than the 16 ohm 4X12. At high volumes, can get squealy even with the volume down on the guitar. Still sounds really cool, but mine doesn't have the "3D" characteristics of a better amp. I wouldn't use it live but it can get really loud for 5 watts and until I get about 2 o'clock on the volume, it sounds good before kind of fizzing. If it was a hundred bucks, I would have been disappointed but at fifty, I'm glad I got it. After the holidays I want to record something with it. Also thinking about getting the Ampero with a power amp to replace the combo. Just for a lighter load to carry to clubs when it's safe to play out again.
