New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Stopped in GC tonight to pick up some strings, and ended up putting down a deposit for the RR head. They have no idea when they are getting them, but I got dibs on the first one. :D

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Who's getting the extra money Marshall is making for slapping Rhoads' name on this thing?

Because Randy's probably just a dirty skeleton by now...

I hear people criticize players like Randy Rhodes and Eddie Van Halen, but none of those critics can ever fill their shoes. Back in the day the tone was fine. By todays standards it probably sounds raunchy but name many great players back then and you will not get much better results. It would actually be really nice for a change to hear someone with great tone who can actually match up to someone like Randy.

well, i like his note choices, and i like his approach to his solos- they have this 'worked out' kinda feel to them. like frank gambale- one of the most monster players alive right now, but i can't stand the sound he has gotten over the past 20 years.

^ I like Randy's tone. This tells it all

Let me start by saying I am a HUGE fan of Randy's playing. I have heard for many years, on many different forums, guys talking about how his tone sucked and so forth. Yet, with all the technology and advancements in gear and recording technology that have taken place in the 25 to 30 years since Randy recorded those albums, I have yet to hear any of these critics share any of their own recordings featuring the earth-shattering tone that Marshall should no doubt be paying tribute to instead of Mr. Rhoads. :biglaugh:

Well said my friend. It's hard to tolerate any criticism of Randy Rhodes. His life was cut short. Who knows what he would have sounded like five or ten years later. That dude was a real badass unlike any of his critics.

Did they even have a price to tell you?

That's awesome that you'll be one of the first to get one. I have a feeling it'll be a great amp to play loud. I'd love to hear it cranked up with strats too.

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

How can you guys be a fan of someone's playing yet hate his tone??? :smack:

To me, a player's tone is what attracts me to a player.

Very true, music is a hearing art, above all.

I think it's partly to do with the era in Randy's case. he could play very well, and had just enough differentiation in his style to stand apart from Ed Van Halen. For a while there it was Ed and him at the top of the heap, and everyone else clamouring to get with the program. It also didn't hurt that he played on some of Ozzy's catchiest, most enduring songs.

Here's an interesting exercise for someone: do an Ed-head and go to great lengths to cop randy's studio tone. Then post the clips on the internet. But don't play actual Randy licks and just tell people 'here's my tone, whaddaya think?'

-It'd be interesting to hear the reaction.

Love the look of the head, by the way.

No, my friend really didn't know anymore than us, but he seemed to feel that it would be inline with the Kerry King. They (GC) are not even expecting them until late Feb, early Mar, so I have plenty of time to squirrel away some money.

a full report/review is in order when they come in!

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Erik and I were discusaing this via email..here's what i told him

I loved his studio tone as well..it FIT the music..was is it warm? hell no...was it it "brown"?...hell no....people crack me up...ozzy was AS HEAVY AS IT GOT in 1980..and Randys tone was heavy as hell and it fit perfectly...its agressive and raunchy and cut like mad...

If he was playing with Angus Young Tone, or EVH tone..it would have sounded like ass...

And thats the bottom line AFAIC. I love his studio tone, and I love his live tone. He deserves all the recongnition they could bestow on him..alive or posthumously. I hope Delores and the estate get a HUGE friggin sum of cash , and its about the only "sig" piece of gear I'd actually be proud to own. This amp is a "tribute" its not a gear whore EVH/Zakk/George Lynch/Hendrix estate type of thing. Delores has been very careful about her son's legacy and rightly so..she's never allowed his name to be whored out to the industry.

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Hmm, does anyone know if these will be limited numbers only?

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Heck, I want that whole fullstack.

I'll have fun with it for a few years, then sell it for 10 grand when there's no fullstacks to be had. I'll put it next to my mint Jubilee stack that's rising in value faster than anything I own.

To bad a G&L, Tele, and BLUE mic have to hit the auction block! I ain't rich, but I get what I want.

+1. I'd love to get a whole stack also. that would be a cool investment. I think the head has an extra gain stage (3) with all of them one into another (cascaded) or something.

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

I don't know about passing it off as 100% Randy Rhoads tone, because Randy also used the MXR distortion plus and MXR 10 band EQ, but I'll bet all the Randy Rhoads stalkers at the Randy Rhoads forum are jizzing their pants like no tomorrow.

It seems cool, but I'd rather play a stock JMP or MKII.

dude, wait til secondhand. It may be a great sounding Marshall, and it may not. Especially considering you could pick up a s/h Germino, Roccaforte, Reinhardt etc...

Same as the other artist heads, propably (Kerry King, Zakk Wylde, Jimi Hendrix). Oh, btw, Is that avatar from a rescent Thin Lizzy Tour, at least it looks that way, with Gorhams black Strat and old looks.

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

I'm dropping into my local shop on Tuesday when the owner is back from NAMM to find out about it. I must have one.

I agree. My first move will be to spot one of the first used ones on Ebay, then buy it now.

However, I think this amp will be such a hit that they'll be hard to find used.
A lot of people will be clamoring for the used ones. Plus, I haven't even played it yet. I thought I'd like the Vintage Modern, and ended up NOT liking it.

I don't have any plans to use it as a main amp, although it's possible. It's mostly as a cool amp to own....partly as an investment. The other amps you mentioned will drop in value by a few hundred, and then stay there.
This RR Marshall will stay at face value, then rise, after they're long gone. Just like the Slash model. Only if it's a killer amp though. I'll know once I play one.

DA%@#^$%@^ I wish I was at the NAMM show this weekend.

I always forget that Marshalls seem to hold value better in the States. From that perspective, you could be on to a winner...

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

They just look so awesome. I went to the Rhoads forum and found some more NAMM pics.
There's even one in black, so I wonder if they'll be available in both colors like the EVH heads.

I think so yes. I got it off google.

Re: New Marshall Sig Randy Rhoads head.

Those look great in white.

The amp itself wouldn't be my style but I don't think Randy's tone was horrible. From what little Ozzy I have listened to (I used to be a bit of a fan in my pre-teen years) I liked Randy's tone, the raunch fit the music.

I think Zakk Wylde's tone is awful, though. Really bad. And those "squeals" that he does drive me nuts. :wall:
