New SG day!

I've been GAS-ing for an SG for quite a while. Yesterday while I was scouring some Vietnamese guitar forum for a new practice amp, I saw this guy reducing the price on an ebony japanese epiphone SG with open-book headstock. He lived 15 minutes away from me so I made an appointment to see the guitar the following morning. When I got there, I found out that the guitar was alot more beat up than it seemed in his blurry phone pics. It even had a headstock repair he did himself which he DIDN'T list in his sales post. Nonetheless I took my time to get there so I sat down anyway and tried the guitar out. The guitar turned out to be a player and despite the headstock repair the sustain was great. I spent some time chatting with him and haggled for one hell of a discount, walking away with the guitar for 200$.
Now for PICS:

Gibson open-book headstock, which is the main reason why I'm interested in the guitar. I find normal epiphone headstocks really hideous.

I actually quite like the roadworn look. Pickguard has been removed for extra rawness. The stock pickups sound nice, but I'm probably gonna upgrade them to duncans soon. The bridge and tailpiece have been swapped out for crappy korean ones by the previous owner which was a little bummer. Oh and the neck feels GREAT, I'd even dare say that the fretwork is on par with my friend's gibsons!

The previous owner did a pretty nice repair job. The guitar played great and the crack was hardly visible. He said that he could've covered it all up but left it half transparent so buyers will know (which I think was kinda dumb, he could've just listed it in the sales post in the first place).

all in all it's a great NGD for me, now that I have strats, a tele, a les paul and an SG in my collection, I wonder what body shape I should go for next? :D

Congrats and very nice indeed! I do find the Epi Headstocks to be not very pleasing to the eye but I wonder if it would be the other way around if Epis were the expensive ones and Gibsons were the cheap ones ;)

+1. People tend to find expensive things more beautiful.

Nice!

Not a big fan of the Epi headstocks either. That being said, I do have an Epi SG, and it's playability and sound more than makes up for it.

Re: New SG day!

There are few headstocks more 'hideous' than PRS.

I get the acquired taste of a PRS, but sorry, this kicks Epiphone's MIK/MIC headstock to the curb. And you never see any PRS owners trying to convert their headstocks to something else. Not to mention my 245s headstock overlay has higher quality rosewood than anything epiphone ever puts on as a fingerboard (and about the same thickness, too ;) )

This looks like my 4 year old's take home art from pre-school

No, no one's going to convert a PRS headstock and devalue their guitar. But the only reason people don't cringe when they see a PRS headstock is because of the price tag. If Epi had come out with headstock shaped like that (before PRS had introduced them), they would be cussed out by most players as being god-awful. Put it on a $3,000 PRS, and it becomes a thing of beauty. Funny how that works.

What about people who convert 2-3K heritages?

Sorry Rick, it's not a money issue. It's a fuggly issue.

Re: New SG day!

I think price does have part to do with it as does one's exposure. Growing up my dad almost exclusivily played pointy Charvels and Jackson–and I thought Charvel Jacksons had the best looking headstocks around. I always thought Ibanez looked cheap because it was pointy but not like the Charvel and the Ibanez guitars I saw in stores were cheaper. Comparatively, I thought Parkers looked cool with their thin somewhat pointy headstocks and I knew those were expensive (was excited when their P series came out and i could afford one.) I do think people would prefer the Epi version IF the original headstock on the Les Paul was an Epi and it was the expensive brand. I do like the Ovation headstocks probably because of association to my dad's Breadwinner and being a fan of Glen Campbell. But its not always about price–I think Bugatti and Rolls Royce cars are super ugly, would rather own a Pontiac Solstice for looks (yes, I know those should never be compared lol.)

I think the Fender 12 String "Villager" headstock has got to be one of the ugliest followed by the awful Dean "V" headstock...honorable mention is the Fender CBS Headstock that looks way out of proportion to the guitar :D

Could not agree more on that f'ing Dean headstock, and that extra (to me) ugly Trump-Huge Fender headstock. I know some people like 'em, but they give me the willies! I have always wanted a 12 string electric, and if I ever got a fender 12, well, I have a saw that would fix that headstock so fast you'd think your ass was skinned. The Epi headstock, like the the one shown with the binding, would look better if it had a smaller bushing on top, like the front of the op's headstock, so I like the Epi also, and understand how some could find it ugly.
More to the point of money-I liked that headstock since I was 13-14 as the first guitar idol before I heard the British players, was a local guy (NW) named Denny Weaver, they played Cream-like guitar based stuff, he was great, he had an Epiphone Casino, so I loved the headstock because he played it. Many things go into what pleases you and what does not.

can't agree more, I find the fender 12 string and CBS headstocks ugly as hell.
I like the normal prs headstock but can't stand the headstock on the santana sig model:
