NGD: couple of weeks old but so cool...

So, I've been playing my acoustic music with a drummer lately. Sounds amazing, sounds huge. Thing is: I've never liked how an acoustic sounds to front a band: it gets lost amongst the cymbals, the bass, it just gets lost in the mix. I needed something closer than my les pauls to an acoustic in order to keep the resonance but more akin to an electric as well for flexibility, feedback resistance and to cut through better.

The solution: full hollow-body. Found this little number for quite cheap...

Ibanez AK-85. Changed the pick-ups (stock weren't bad but needed more bite) to a set of Phat-Cats. Now it's a total MONSTER for what I need...

That's a beauty! Interesting pairing of guitar and amp there, too! Nobody puts a modern interpretation onto the classic guitar designs like Ibanez does, IMO, and the prices can't be beat with a stick.

Congrats, and happy NGD!

Thanks guys, the guitar didn't need much set-up (although I will have to work on the nut a bit, just to shave it down to let the strings "breathe" a bit more, they're buried in there) and, with the PC, sounds amazing. Very good sounding set-up so far and quite happy with it! Amazing value for the money.

Ibanez delivers yet again. A mate of mine had an AF-75: smooth cutaway, tune-o-matic – decent guitar, real workhorse.

If you get problems with feedback, install a sound post under the bridge (like a violin), that should cut it down a good bit.

Thanks for the tip. For now it's pretty good (I play mostly clean with some light break-up sometimes).

The guitar's actually much browner in person, very good looking. Great axe for very little dough. I knew their artcore series was good but I didn't expect this good to be honest.

How do the Oranges fare for this type of music? Are you running both or just one at a time?

fully hollow?

Yup :)

Sounds great to me! Depends on what you want I guess. I'm not trying to recreate the acoustic vibe of my record and not chasing a fenderesque clean either. I'm going for a nice rock sound with just a tad of hair and bite on top and pushed with an SHO when needed. Both sound really good but so far the TH30 sounds a bit better to me due to the livelier character of its clean channel. I'm assuming that, when I'll need more volume the Rocker may be a better bet, due to the higher headroom of the natural channel (I still need most of my tone to be cleanish and the break-up on the TH30's clean channel past noon might be a bit too much).

Both sound amazing right now and I have a pretty heavy-handed drummer (orange + p90 = sweet) but the TH30 gets a bit more action right now. The rocker needs new tubes too so I'll have to re-assess.

I'm only running one at a time (no need to use both simultaneously) but always bring both to rehearsal since it's in my garage for now and I like to experiment.

That's such an awesome rig.

Congrats, man. Hope you enjoy it. :beerchug:

Thanks Kam! I really, really do!

I played all three of my les pauls for that project and it turned out that the Jr with the p90 was the best sounding for that purpose but was still missing the "air" of the acoustic... that axe is really a great compromise!

Effin' suhweet.
I think I've never EVER read a comment from you on ANY piece of gear anywhere that was negative. You must be like, I dunno, the easter bunny on prosack or something... :D Not that it's a bad thing at all... :)
