NGD: Fake or Real Gibson SG?

I got bored and swapped my epiphone dot studio for this, and I like it better than the dot. Is it a fake or a real one? I checked the S/N with Gibson and it does belong to a Cherry Red SG Standard from 2006.

Looks real to me......you don't see a lot of SGs being counterfeited, but its possible. Need a few more photos to be sure though.........

Well, I just had a friend confirm it was a real SG.. Welp, successfully got a nice Gibson for practically free.

Yep, there's about 6 things that you can easily check to look for fakes and while I've seen some good ones none have had all 6 of these "Gibson Markers" but id need more pictures to be sure....

Re: NGD: Fake or Real Gibson SG?

Without more and closer pictures it's hard to say for sure, but there are a few suspicious areas. First of all the headstock logo is too yellow, second a 2006 SG Standard would have a Nashville bridge instead of an ABR, the bridge itself looks like the Asian ABR Epiphone uses, the poker chip looks wrong (also like Epiphone), the switch tip is the wrong color, and the neck / body joint looks 'off'. It's absolutely possible that the bridge, poker chip, and switch tip have been replaced, but that yellow logo has me disinclined to believe it's genuine. Honestly it looks like an Epi SG with a different headstock logo. Considering that many Epis are MIC now, it's entirely possible that it's made in the same factory and sold "grey market".

Real or not, it looks like a fine guitar. How does it sound and feel? In the final analysis, that's all that really matters. I'm not a Gibson player but I've always loved the cherry red SGs. I think you scored on that one.

Also, if you can see it through the finish (you normally can on most models) look at the back of the headstock & check to see if its made from one piece of wood or three. A real Gibson will have a narrow headstock with two wings glued to the sides where as Epi/Chipson knockoffs are usually made from a single piece. This is actually a better way of making them but when did anything Gibson make much sense?

It's also why a Melody Makers headstock looks as skinny as it does. They just skip putting on the wings during the building process to save money when it comes to the bottom line.....

If it sounds good and you like it, does it really matter if its a real Gibson or not?

Re: NGD: Fake or Real Gibson SG?

If the bridge has a flathead, bail.

If the truss rod has 3 points, fail.

They're getting better/closer unfortunately...

Funnily enough, the TRC has 2 screws. Well even if it is a fake it still plays better than most real Gibsons anyway

The pics in the other thread aren't great, but I'm pretty sure the bridge posts have flathead adjustment screws. I'm sure it's a nice guitar, but I seriously doubt it's real.

Re: NGD: Fake or Real Gibson SG?

Looks fake. I'm sure it's nice but there are some issues already been pointed out. That fact thst you traded an Epi for it tells me you got hustled.

Well I don't care anyway, at least they got the S/N hustled to the correct guitar.

Re: NGD: Fake or Real Gibson SG?

I'm a bit suspicious already as the logo isn't on the right angle

So you need to post in focus pics of:

bridge
ser #
fretboard showing fret ends
headstock closeup.

Take them in good even light......no indoor lighting qualifies.

Re: NGD: Fake or Real Gibson SG?

Take off the control cover, and see if there's a date written on the back of any of the pots, see if it matches what you were told.
