NGD: Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway

That is one awesome guitar! I should probably do the volume pot 500k upgrade on my SG Special too. It sounds awesome as-is, but I bet it will sound even awesome-er with 500k's.

Those are good. Spend the little extra and get the ones that are within 10% spec or even 5% of spec. The tighter the tolerance, the closer the actual stamped value they are.

It should say in the stock pots what they are.

This...

I metered several CTS, and some were off as much as $80k!

I like Bourns pots myself.

That's one expensive pot! You sure it was the right pot? LOL

I've come across some off by 70k myself. Those are the ones that fall in the +/- 20% category (20% of 500k is 100k so they fall within spec).

Thanks. Where can I buy these pots to those specs?

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway

Beautiful guitar! Always appreciated Les Paul Juniors and Specials. For a couple of years in the late 60's/early 70's, I really had a thing for them.

Regarding the 500K pot thing: I'm pleased that so many have seen the light. :)

I used to take a lot of heat here sometimes when I'd tell guys to get those 300K pots out of thier Gibsons and replace them with 500K.

Times change.

I know when I've changed the pots to 500K for friends and clients, even those 57 Classics started sounding a lot better!

Sometimes you don't need a new set of pickups as much as a new set of good 500K pots. :)

Holy hell yes.

The pots are a massive part of your tone IMHO. They can turn even junk pickups into decent sounding things. I had a plywood guitar I gave to a friend a while back, just had Epiphone pickups and some CTS pots... pretty good sounding guitar. I enjoyed it quite a bit when I had it.

Thanks ErikH. To everyone else speaking positively about the 500k pots upgrade, this will most defiantly be my next upgrade in the near future.

Looking at the pots on mojotone. What is the difference between solid and split shafts? Long and short?

You want split shaft. Solid is for Telecaster knobs and those that are held on by a set screw.

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Special Single Cutaway

Short split shaft is what you want for your guitar.
