NGD PRS 305 NAD PV XXX

I went to Guitar Center's pre-Black Friday invitation only event on Sunday night. My local GC had a Peavey XXX combo that I'd previously plugged in to and had my eye on. I wanted to see if they'd offer a special deal for that event.
I was also considering a Peavey JSX head they had there, marked at $499(!).
And I was also considering the MXR "buy two, get a free Badass Overdrive" offer they're running.

So I got there, and prices on these items were the same as last time I'd been there, no special deal. They said they could knock $50 off the used Peavey amps, whichever one I decided on.

And then I walked into the Platinum room.

I saw these tags on all the PRS guitars, covering an entire wall, with prices marked down by hundreds of dollars. There is a new sunburst 309 with rosewood board that has been hanging there since 2009 that called my name when I first saw it 4 years ago. Every time I went over there, I'd see it still there.
Sunday night it was marked down by $1,000, I kid you not. 305's sell on the used market for a couple $100 more than what I got this new one for.

I had no intention of buying a guitar on Sunday. But I walked out with the Peavey XXX combo, an MXR Micro Chorus and Prime Distortion, and a 2009 PRS 305. 18 months to pay, otherwise I could not have considered it. The 305 joins my other 305 which I got in 2011 and have been enjoying since then.

BTW if anyone's wondering, no, my intention is not to play the 305 through the XXX. They're as mismatched as two pieces of gear can be.
I bought the 305 because I found the 305 I already have to be excellent at getting David Gilmour type Strat tones, with amazing, singing sustain. It will be played through my Jet City, my Peavey Penta, my Fender Super Sonic, through Amplitube 3, and a couple other amps.
The XXX combo, OTOH, will be used with a Hamer humbucker-equipped guitar, or my Buckethead Les Paul Studio, to get aggressive metal tones. The XXX excels at chug and chunk, and at pinch harmonics that would make Zakk Wylde ask "What amp are you playing through?"

Before I forget, I posted not only to show my new gear, but to give all of you a heads up: my local GC (Brookfield WI) had a wall full of new PRS guitars marked down by as much as $1000. I don't know if this sale is happening at all GC stores or just my local one. I certainly didn't see it mentioned in their last mail catalog that I got. The tags said these prices would last until 11/30/2013. If you have been thinking you might need a new PRS, now is a great time to get one, at as much as $1000 off the normal price (not the MSRP, but GC's already discounted price).

Awesome, sounds nothing like a black Friday event to me! That guitar intrigues me, a modern take on a Strat.

That guitar intrigues me, a modern take on a Strat.

The 305 is actually less of a take on the Strat, as it has a carved top on it more akin to a McCarty or a CU22, 513 etc - the DC3 and NF3 are right in that space though.

And very nice guitar too, hope you enjoy it :)

I helped my friend get a Studio in Santana Yellow a few weeks ago - only cost $1800. It's such a good guitar, and I couldn't believe the price. The salesman told me that they were blowing them out to make room for next year's models.

That's an awesome guitar. I played the same model not that long ago and I was very impressed. Killer price too. Score! Enjoy it in good health.

Oh and nice amp too haha

Nice!!!

So did you get the free other MXR pedal?
The MXR deal is a mail-in thing. I have the form filled out. I have to include a copy of the receipt and the bar code labels from the boxes, send that all to MXR and they send me a Badass Modified Overdrive in the mail.

'Zat a bolt-on?

Need a pic of the pair!!!

:)

It's set neck. I'll see if I can snap a pic of both tonight. Meanwhile, here are a couple of the pics I posted when I got the first one.

The single coil pickups, the whammy, body wood (alder) and scale length are based on the Strat design. Other aspects of the guitar are PRS's unique twists. The neck carve is nothing like a Fender. It's narrow, with a soft V in the back. The pickups are PRS's 513 pickups, which don't really sound like Fender pickups. They sound a little fatter, and have less of that Strat ping on the attack. They sound great in the 2 and 4 positions, and soloing on the bridge pickup sounds great.

Looked at and played a couple of those and they are super cool guitars. I'm a PRS player also a custom 24.
CONGRATS!!!

Nice guitar and great amp. I love XXX's, had that same combo at one point. Re-bias with a good set of EL34's and you have a killer!

Re: NGD PRS 305 NAD PV XXX

Two great pieces of gear Kosh, congrats. Those 305's are haunting me: I love how they get stratty, but feel like a PRS (which I am used to). You know, if you ever wanted that 305 to match up with the new XXX, you could send it to the PTC and get them to throw a humbucker in the bridge. ;)

Very nice indeed, great looks (super wood on the burst!), and sounds good too, judging from the various YouTube clips.
