Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

The BEST modeler I've heard live was Al Pitrelli in TSO the first 2 or 3 years they came to Little Rock. POD-->Marshall Monobloc-->monitors and board is what he told me. There is a distinct tonal difference between the first TSO album and Beethoven's Last Night Album. I attribute that to Al's extensive POD usage.

I own a POD XT that I use when I go to my inlaws house, and when I played at church. That said when I see a local guy go on stage with a modeling amp I know I'm about to hear someone use a patch in some weird way that's going to grate on my ears....which is only slightly less annoying than Mr. Blackface Guy who has a Twin or Deluxe with the Treble at 10 and can slice you in half at 100 paces. When I go out to play (about once a month) I take a tube amp as my amp and my modeler as a backup.

I won't use one unless they come stock w/ the Vintage Whisperer, A8, A4, and the Blewman patches.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

I could tell that was a modeller with my head in a bucket of cement. The lead sounds lack any kind of dynamics.
Sure. Ignore the chewy/crunchy rhythm parts to take shots at the clam-riddled leads. :) Frankly, I've been meaning to re-record the lead for that 'cause I'm not thrilled with the tone (or playing) myself.

I think my english skills are going down as age comes up.

The 1,300 gigs and all the others are counting from 2005, when I got my first modeler. I opened with that statement.

The may 2011 is the date that I started to mainly use the laptop and S-Gear. Sorry about the confusion.

However, from april 1982 to november 1995, my fiscal records show that I did make an average of 250 three-hour gigs a year.

I was young and eager, then. ;)

This is a picture of Chuck Loeb's rig, guitar player with Four Play.

I saw'em last winter at Milano's Blue Note, and Chuck's tone coming from that rig was simply heaven on earth.

Don't know how many Jazz players frequent this board, but I can tell you: to see this group and hear their music is one of the ten things you MUST DO before you die.

HTH,

I had to give it up after having kids ruined my figure.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

I can understand why people like modelers for home recording, and I've seen bands with Line 6 amps that were real crowd pleasers. I can also understand the value in a group such as Four Play, as mentioned by LtKojak. They also would be great in a cover band that covers different musical styles.

That said, the styles of rock and blues that I play are straight ahead, and the tube amps that I own currently, and in times past, have been all that I need to deliver the goods.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

I play an Eleven Rack through two Marshall 4x12 cabinets pretty much everyday.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

Ive made hundreds of recordings with modelers, and play on my

tech 21 character series oxford pedal analog modeler

every two to three days :) ...needing to build up to every day tho, tis mah goal ;)

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

I've got a Yamaha THR10x. I see it as a life saver, because I like to play at night and it allows me to get really cool sounds, plus effects, without a lot of volume. It's also got the responsiveness that I get from tube amps.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

I have Micro Cube and love it. My first exposure to a modeling amp was back in the 90s when I jammed with a drummer that had one of the first line 6 amps. I thought it sounded much like a transistor amp with a bunch effects. They have improved drastically since then. I was pretty surpized by the tone quality of the Cube. I got the Cube because I needed a portable practice amp. As good as it sounds, I would never gig with it though. I only use one set up on the Cube and it stays there all the time. I could probably be better served by a hybrid one trick poney like the Orange MT20 as a portable practice amp.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

BTW, is there a place to rent an Axe-FX for a week?

I know I can just buy it and return it but I'd prefer a proper rental.

that is a really good idea

I think all these big ticket items should be rentals, or at least allow for a test drive at actual band volumes

Bought my Vox Valvetronix Blue series head new in 02...Still have it,still love it,still gets alot of use...

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

It's interesting how many people sound-off on modelers when they haven't even heard a high-end modeler.

I've had an Axe-FX for over four years. First an Ultra, then an Axe II. I had Pods, Boss GT's (three different types) and others (I got rid of so fast I can't remember their name).

The Axe FX has been a complete game-changer for me. I can play electric guitar, acoustic guitar and bass through the same rig. No tempermental tubes, no heavy cabs and tranformers.

True, the Axe II keeps improving. Cliff Chases' coding chops are getting much better. We get free new amp models with almost every firmware update. I used to build amps just to try and capture the sound I was hearing in my head. Now, I can do it virtually for no expense.

Its been the best gear purchase in my life and that goes back to '67 when I bought my first amp. Completely cured any amp gas - it's even gotten rid of pedal gas.

I'm still working on turning down the guitar and pickup gas.

Re: No love for modeling 'round here, uh?

So what do you do when your Axe-FX breaks? Is there a backup?
