Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

Gear Ho
Excluding guitars you've tried....and limited to yours, which ones have necks to die for, and why?

My newest aquisition, which is still on layaway, is the Gibson SG Diablo. The 50's neck on it is so killer, I don't even have to do a setup. I'm dying over this thing. It's 24 fret, which I don't usually go for, but since it's an SG that's simply filling the space that a plate would take, I have no problem with it. The neck is just perfect.

Same with my 35th Anniversary LP Custom Black Beauty 3 pickup model. It's a natural 50's C neck that has a perfect nut, perfect frets, and perfect setup. Just amazing.

My 1990 LP Std Goldtop. 50's neck. Bone nut, fret dress, and perfect action.

And finally, my 2000 PRS vintage sunburst flametop McCarty. Absolutely great wide fat soft V neck that's unreal.

The rest of my guitars play great, but those 3 are so stupendous, that it's worthy of thinking about. I'd add my 2007 Memphis ES-335, but it's a slim tapered 60's neck, which I had to grow to love. It's still amazing, but a slightly thin 50's profile with a perfect setup will always be my absolute favorite.

Your favorites?

My favorite neck is on my Dean VMNT. Next favorite is my Jackson DKMG.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

I love my main strat's neck. It's similar to, but even better than, the MIM 70's players Strat neck. It's got a really smooth and thick lacquer almost like gibson, and it's the U shape neck so it's a little fatter than your usual fender.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

Gibson 60's neck is my favorite by far. Apparently they aren't making LP Standards/Traditionals with it right now. I'm assuming in a year or two they will again so I can get a LP to compliment my SG, with a neck I won't have to get used to.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My Gibson Faded V has a great neck -- open-grain mahogany with a thin, nitro finish. It's just fun to touch. The ends of the frets were a little sharp; I ended up doing the piece-of-wood-wrapped-in-sandpaper mod, but it feels great since then.

My JEM7DBK has the best thin neck. It's a multipiece Wizard (correction:JEM) neck, with a satin finish. It's super-stable, super-smooth, and doesn't cramp my hand like a lot of other skinny necks I've played and owned.

My Epiphone Les Paul Custom has the best-feeling neck for overall proportions and how it fits my hands -- thick palms and short fingers. It's not not very wide, and it's not as thick as, say, my Peavey Wolfgang. It's just right. In the refinishing project, I took it down to bare wood, stained it, and put on just enough of an oil finish to call it a finish. It's like silk, and I could play on it all day without fatigue.

Believe it or not, the best neck I have, in terms of feel and playability, is a wenge tele neck from Warmoth. No finish, buttery smooth, and one of the best fret/nut jobs I've ever had on a neck.

The JEM necks are 2mm thicker than the original Wizard neck, so that explains it

THE ERNIE BALL AXIS SUPER SPORT'S assymetrical carved neck is wierd at first, but after you get used to it, you hate everything other neck!

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My Ernie Ball/Music Man Silhouette Special with its waxed neck and scalloped fretboard is the best neck I have ever played, bar none.

My EBMM Silo Special's neck is unscalloped, but has stainless steel 6115 size frets.

It's almost TOO easy to play.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

I really like the shape of my '61 RI Tele Custom's neck. It has a beefy round back at the nut and flattens out as it goes up. I've never played another neck like it.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My Parker Nitefly's neck is incredible. I'll attribute a lot of it to the amazing stainless steel frets, a good portion to the great shape of the neck that while thin, doesn't cramp my hand, and the rest to the carbon glass/epoxy fretboard. Amazing guitar.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

PRS Wide Fat is one of my faves- feels like a big old Strat neck crossed with a 50s production Gibson neck (like on SG standards)

I really love the Mighty Mite neck on my Strat as well, probably the best neck for me ever- it's a pretty chunky vintage strat type-deep, round, but not super wide.

For thinner necks I think the necks on my old Destroyers were incredible, the only thin necks that evert felt truly comfortable for me.

i like those fender soft v necks. to bad theyr dont do those on rosewood necks

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

The best feeling, best playing necks I have are on my two 2009 Charvel Production Models, a San Dimas 1 and a So-Cal 1. My So-Cal's neck is especially great, I never want to stop playing that guitar. The neck feels like the thigh of a southern California coed!

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My 2000 Epiphone Dot has my favorite neck that I've played . . . it's got a thick 'U' shape that just fits perfectly in my hands. The frustrating thing is that whenever I go to the music stores and try out the dots they have on the wall, none of them feel the same. I've never been able to get along with the thinner Ibanez Wizard necks and the like, my hands cramp up on them too easily.

I like the PRS wide/fat necks that are on my McCarty's!

My Gretsch white falcon

Followed by two identical 24-3/4 inch maple necks with rosewood fingerboards made to my custom specifications by USA custom guitars (e.g., Tommy).

PRS SE Soapbar

Wide Fat neck carve.

It's huge. Like really huge. You would probably hate it.

The frets are not necessarily tall, but they are wide. They're massive. The radius of the (exquisite) fretboard is 10". Just right.
