Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

Ok I am going to say it then go ahead and flame me. My RW Tele. Its like a smooth baseball bat, fast as crap through a sick cat, and so comfortable. I have come to like the Gibson scale a bit more but that is a different topic.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

for rock rhythm, the neck on my tokai '52ri tele clone is damn near perfect ... it is so chunky - really supports digging in and rockin out

for overall playing, the neck on my EJ strat is 9.99 / 10 ... i keep thinking about knocking the gloss down a bit to make it slightly less sticky

the neck om my PRS sc245 is also very beefy and comfortable for overall playing

i have been working on using less fretting pressure in my left hand and i find that all guitars are becoming equally comfortable to me ... i would experience hand cramps from grabbing too hard on the thinner necks (brian moore, ibanez 540s) ... my spee and accuracy is increasing as i do this too ... i am having to adjust my right hand playing though because i have always felt that a lot of my soloing tone (and tonal variety) has come from my left hand fretting pressure variances ... so its all a journey

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

This is the one thing about guitars that just goes over my head. I have guitars from Gibson, Fender, Xaviere, Hondo, Jay Turser, SX, Douglas, Agile, Epiphone, Ovation and Ravenwest. I have no idea what the neck shapes are on any single one. Sure, I can feel that one is fatter or wider than another but it doesn't matter one bit to me. None of them feel uncomfortable or necessarily better than another. I don't play any differently and what I am capable of playing on one, I am capable of playing on all.

So, am I weird, ignorant or just lucky?

Nope. The more neck profiles you're accustomed to, the less you even think about it. Even though this thread is about your absolute favorites, it doesn't mean you don't enjoy every guitar you own.

I didn't even mention my Fenders. I love the way they all feel, but the action isn't anything worth mentioning....just medium with 11's. A lot of players would think they play too stiff. But I'm used to everything, because I really don't care.....I just play'em.

But if we're splitting hairs, which is what this thread is about, I'm sure there's at least one that everyone owns that's as close to perfection as possible.

My MIM Strat would be my absolute favourite. I've sanded down the finish and gotten a professional refret with some sanding down of the fretboard to make it more consistent for its radius. That neck feels so good, and it has a countless amount of hours worth of my sweat in it. I love that neck. The only thing that annoys me is the Fender neck joint, but on the other hand, the guitar just wouldn't sound the same without it.

My 60's neck 2008 Gibson Les Paul comes in a close second place.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My favorite neck is my BC Rich Mockingbird. I loved my Les Paul's profile but the Mock was just a little tad bit thinner and it has an ebony board which feels so smooth. It's also a neck through so there is no heal which is awesome. I can get all the way to the 24th fret if I wanted to but honestly I only got a 24 fret neck through just to get to the 22nd fret without effort. From now on though I will prolly stay 22 frets because it totally kills the neck pickup's tone but yea my Mockingbird is my standard in feel. It also has a recessed Floyd so I can get a really low action on it too. It's like butter. The only way it would be better is if the frets were stainless steel and not nickel but that will have to wait awhile until I need to refret.

My Parkers first, then my Jacksons and Charvels in a tie for second place.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

I've owned quite a few guitars and I'd have to say that my two favorites are:

--2004 Jackson Soloist SL1T. I love the shape, thickness, nut width, fret size, flat radius, ebony fretboard, etc. Only thing that would make it better IMO were if it were satin, oiled, or unfinished instead of painted as I love the feel of a smooth neck back. I sometimes wish it didn't have a pointy headstock, but that's another discussion.

--1996 Hamer USA Daytona. It's actually fairly similar to the Soloist except a little chunkier and it has a maple board and does have a satin finish. I bought another Daytona (1994) hoping it would be the same and it wasn't. I guess in those days (and maybe still.....haven't kept up with Hamer) there was a lot of variation in neck sizes depending on what builder was doing on a given day.

Absolute favorite; '78 Ibanez musician. Neck thru, ebony board, slim and slick. Shes pretty fast for her age. #2 is my '82 Ibanez custom artist. Also an ebony board, the neck profile is a bit thicker than the musician, not quite as fast but oh so comfortable.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

Hands-down, My Dean Soltero MHG. Nice, medium V-neck, 12" radius, jumbo frets, rolled binding, ebony board. Fits like a glove. It's a work of art, I say.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

It's interesting that 90% of these posts are about guitars that people currently have. I wonder how much familiarity breeds love of your guitar's neck?

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

I can't believe how much the price of Fender Am. Deluxes have shot up in the past year or two, but the feel of those necks is worth the price of admission.

I got mine at a ridiculous price... it was one of the first to be shipped in Canada... hot off the press, and at the time was the first and only one at the store... so they had it for i think $400 Cdn off regular street price... so i acted quickly.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My Hamer Monaco Elite Mahogany
my custom ESP strat-style
my Washburn USA MG-70
my Peavey USA Limited.
All four have round but not huge necks. They feel right.
I do also like flat necks, and have a few guitars including Hamers and a Robin that have that kind of neck. They make me feel like I want to shred. But the moderate sized round necks are just really comfortable for rhythm and lead.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My CS336...it feels wider, more of a 'D' shape, I use this exclusively so I feel very comfy with it, when I noodle on my LP, the 60's shape feels odd.

Re: Of all your guitars, which ones have the absolute best necks?

My absolute favorite is my '75 Strat.

I like it so much I wish I could get the neck copied; I'd retrofit all my Strats with that spec.

I have yet to play a USA Dean Soltero MHG. I've tried the imports and they weren't bad but that MHG is oil finished if i'm not mistaken? There was one on Ebay a few months ago that sold for $850 which was an absolute steal.... wish I had the funds at the time. Being its your favorite neck ... I don't suppose you'd want to get it off your hands.... PLEASE?.... LOL.... *SIGH*
