If you define entertainment as circus side-show freaks, yes. I saw Joe Bonamassa a year ago; it was the most high-quality, professional concert I've ever seen. Truly impressive. But then, there were no bizarre costumes, smoke-grenade PU's, fireworks, or car chases, so by teenager standards, pretty boring.

I played in a old school blues band for 2 years, with this.

I was never laughed at. At the end of each show, I was asked, " what kind of guitar is that? It sounded and looks great!"

I gotta stick up for Blueman and give out a penalty for piling on. Blue is a cool dude... BUT I am guilty of being a stodgy old elitist fart also. If Karp can keep an open mind try out a mindnumbingly cheap 200.00 Indochinese Cedrowood Jackson, when he also has a top of the line Gibson Explorer then I need to learn from that
. I , and others here also probably,need to give off a better vibe, and stop alienating the younger crowd with nonsense about stuff like Basswood and disparagement of cheap guitars like Dominus makes.
Hell, I also have a cheap Squier, and its one of my favorite guitars( although its been modified quite a bit) , and its probably Basswood, or worse.
Yes, lots of us older guys are dicks in disproportionate numbers. I would like to change .

K.Stien..I had a beef with people claiming their Chinese 250 dollar Plywood Squires ( premium guitars compared to Indochinese) are as good ( or even better! ) than 1000.00/1500.00 American Standards and Deluxes. That ain't gonna happen. But its a lost cause. People who spend 250 bucks these days want to believe they have the best guitar irregardless of price.More power to them. If anyone wants to believe the sound and playability of a guitar isn't dependent upon build quality and price, then far be it from me to suggest otherwise.Anyway, why should I even care? Basswood is now as good as Honduran Mahogany or select Alder..whatever..you won't find me saying anything different anymore.
OTOH, modifying cheap guitars can be fun and a way to learn about stuff.

My $200 Indonesian ART 100 kicks tail over any LP I've ever played, and it doesn't need to be laid down in a velvet-lined hardshell case when not in use. The universe is a funny place - it exists to destroy our preconceived notions.

Bonamassa is also guilty of doing things that have nothing to do with music to entertain people. gajillion guitar changes, the V's, Firebirds, doublenecks, sunglasses indoors, the full suit (who the hell wears a full suit on stage? it must be a hundred degrees in that thing). It's all the same - entertainment. There's no logical muiscal reason to use those things, but he does, just to put on a show and so that it's NOT boring.

Why did Gibson make pointy guitars all those years back and inspire a legion of copycats?
Entertainment factor. They LOOK cool. No musical reason at all.

Joe can go out in public with what he wears on stage and not raise an eybrow. Can't really say that about Kiss. Suits were, and are worn on stage by a lot of old school blues players. It's a tradition. Sunglasses? Many performers worldwide wear them on stage with the bright spotlights in their eyes. Hardly a novelty.

Gibson introduced pointy guitars in 1958 to increase sales and compete with Fender by offering more modern designs. The 'entertainment' factor wasn't the motivation, sales were, and the whole thing completely flopped. V's were created as an in-house joke at Gibson, with no thought initially of ever putting something like that into production. It was largely due to the efforts of a couple bluesmen, Albert King and Lonnie Mack, that V's were kept in the public eye. So again, like suits, it's an old blues tradition. Many touring guitarists have a rack of guitars on stage, for different tunings and tones for certain songs; nothing unusual about that. Where Joe stands out is in how tight and well-reheased his band is. It's impeccable.

It's kind of like movies: some people need lots of wild special effects to keep their attention; others prefer the emphasis be on well-written plots and good acting.

Ironic That you used movies as an example since they are primarily as form of entertainment and their function as art is secondary or even tertiary to their existences entertainment forms.

All your point boils down to is that you're a stodgy traditionalist and couldn't be bothered to understand flashy stage shows as indicative of a wider trend amongst all humans to quench a desire for bombast and spectacle as a form of entertainment

Nonsense. Very few bands survive on music alone. MOST add entertaining elements that have nothing to do with music. Just because a band is entertaining does not equate to poor musicianship. And vice versa.

No not always, but often times there is a difference between the quality and originality of music between: 1) bands that are focused on their image, and 2) bands that are focused on their playing.
