OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

Tell me you brothers understand me. If not for the guitar itself, then for the G.A.S. I irresponsibly acted on and must now make some kind of restitution.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...552282&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2551wt_932

I was planning on selling off a few guitars and other things to reload our bank account a bit, but I was also looking at eBay like a freaking idiot and saw this. Now, I'm in school and my wife works full time. I watch the kids and we barely make enough cash to make it each month...but I did it anyway. What the heck? Why do we do these things? I will be able to replace the cash plus a lot more when I sell off some stuff, but if we have some kind of emergency until then, I got some 'splainin' to do. And I'M usually the responsible one. If I had it to do over...yeah, I'd do it again. I know I would. I never even heard of the Epiphone Pro/FX before, but it just spoke to me. Now I hope it doesn't curse at me, lol.

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

Your balls will be kicked into your thorax when she finds out.

Better hope your other stuff sells really quick and for far more.

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

That's a good guitar. I keep kicking myself for not picking one up when Guitar Center had it as the Deal of the Week for only $479. I tried the Honeyburst and loved the look/playability, but of course it had a chunk of wood taken out of the back by some irresponsible shopper/player. I asked if they could discount it and got a quick no because of the already low price. Oh well. I should have just went to another GC.

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

Uh oh...

I hope the beating isn't too severe. Effing sweet guitar though.

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

While it is indeed a righteous flame top (even if veneer), and the Floyd is interesting if a bit bohemian, and oil splits are always nice...even my wife knows it's an Epiphone.

Your @$$ is grass. And it should be unless this is the tonal holy of holies.

Here are a couple of ways out:

#1 Hide it and hock the stuff you were hocking. Maybe she won't notice until you can cover it.

#2 Tell her it is your last and final guitar and you are getting rid of most of the rest

#3 REALLY hide it, and get her to buy it for you for a B-day or something from a friend, then replace the cash she buys it with to the account.

Or, set up tent city on the couch for a while...learn to cook, do the laundry, and develop your right hand technique, etc....

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

Apologize to the seller, pay any fees they incurred for the auction, and back out honorably from the deal. You have kids man and you have to get out there and work. You can't raise a family with a single man attitude. The man is the rock of the family. If you don't provide, your wife will and resentments will build. It's a terrible idea.

Not only should you straighten this out immediately, you should probably make some changes in the way you think. I'm not trying to be hard or anything, but I've been in that position and didn't miss a beat getting up at 5:00 am to spend all day looking for a job. If that didn't pan out, I would do odd jobs as much as possible. So don't take this as a holier-than-though kind of thing. It's just that I've been in your shoes before.

Besides, if you're going to do something like that then for God's sake don't go out and impulsively buy an Epiphone made in China! At least get a real deal Les Paul. That's like cheating on your wife for an ugly, cheap prostitute. If you're going to cheat on your wife, at least find a mistress that's way hotter than her.

WOW. Just WOW. Way to run the dude over the rocks and make him feel like a total POS. I think anyone, even if they didn't have the means to cover the debt, would take your soap box rant as holier than thou.

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

A "real" Gibson with a Floyd is two a three times that much used, or more.

Just sell off an equivalent amount of stuff. I've done the same thing and am in the same boat as you dude. When I bought the $130 Gotoh Floyd, I sold $200 worth of collectibles I don't care about anymore around the house. Wife didn't kill me.

Keep her and upgrade parts when times are less rough.

It wasn't meant that way, as stated. Like I told him, I've done those very things before and it wasn't until I was hit hard with the facts that I changed. Sometimes you have to be set straight, and the only way I know of effectively helping the guy is by giving him similar advice to what I got when I was in his shoes. It wouldn't be helpful if I told him it was a great looking guitar and to hide it from his wife now would it?

9Finger, do you have kids to raise and a marriage to maintain? I get the impression that you are still single without kids. When you have your own family, nothing comes before them. That's just the way it is. Unless the world has changed so much that I've become an old-fashioned dinosaur then what I told him is exactly what he needs to hear.

I think most of us are in, or have been those shoes man. I don't think any of us are int he position to just go out flailing around shops and the internet buying whatever we want. Hell, even you usually sell of something after getting something else or vice versa. If he didn't have the means to cover the cost of the guitar, I'd completely agree with you and set my soap box right next to yours. I don't know anything about those LP's they could be readily available or completely rare birds, but we both know it's hard to pass up something at a good price. When opportunity knocks, you have to take in this hobby, cuz chances are, opportunity may take awhile to knock again. We've all done similar things, no need to cyber brow beat him over it. Besides, if he were really that bad about doing this, nothing we say is going to change it. From personal experience, it takes a lot more than some dude behind a keyboard to make someone change the way they do things.

Great deals will always come and go. That's like the gambler's fallacy of G.A.S. People rationalize that they have to grab a deal when it comes along or they may never have the chance. On your other point, every single one of us is just a "dude behind a keyboard" here.

I really don't see how my personal life pertains to this, but I'll bite. Actually good sir, I'm married and have a 10 year old and a 3 year old. My wife and I will have been together 13 years in a couple weeks. Our family comes first, always has. That's not to say I haven't done similar things as 75LP. My wife understands the concept of availability and opportunity and the whole thing in general. She also know I'd never put my family in dire jeopardy over a piece of gear I want and if I didn't have enough of my personal money right then, I normally have no problems in replacing it within a week or so. Yeah were talking about mere days here, which is what I took from the OP, and which he was planning on doing. Even then, if something did come up and I needed to recoup money quick, there's still plenty of other things around to get rid of, even if it meant taking a loss on it.

It's all relative my man. It's not like he's flat broke and has no means of getting the money back. Like I said, I'd park my soap box next to your if that was the case. But he made it quite clear he was selling off some other stuff to recoup the funds. That I don't see as the big deal you made it out to be.

I didn't ask about your personal life, just if you understood the responsibility of raising a family, but thanks for sharing. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned because I have such a rigid set of values. I'm probably more black and white than most people when it comes to certain things.

The way I read his post was pretty black and white to me. He doesn't have a job, the wife supports the family, and he bought a guitar on impulse. It seems like the solution is pretty obvious. He obviously have much bigger priorities than guitars.

Look, I don't know why you're all down my throat about this and not going after people who tell him to hide things from the wife, or put himself before his family. You target me even though I'm the one telling him to do the right thing.

Who's down your throat? I just didn't understand why you were giving him such a hard time over something most of us have done or made sarcastic comments about being in hot water with our wives or girlfriends over purchases. I really don't see the big deal but I digress.

The thing is, the world isn't black and white. Never has been regardless of how old your are or what your particular values are. Not everyone has an all or nothing attitude about things. Most of us have to hustle to get the gear we want, even if that puts us in tight spots at times. I'm sorry you feel like it's such a bad thing. I mean, if my house was being foreclosed on, my kids were wearing bed sheets and only got a half cup of generic cheerios a day for food, then yeah buying a guitar would be really stupid and deserves a good butt chewing, if not a royal butt kicking. However, I seriously doubt this is the case, and I'll say it one more time. If ya got the means to regain the funds, then it's probably not as bad as you're making it out to be.

I'm sorry you think I'm attacking you. You have your opinion and I have mine. Just leave it at that. I've got better crap to do than debate semantics on here.

Re: OMG, I did a REALLY bad thing last night.....

I love the responses to this thread, lol. Ubermetaldude--when I hit buy it now, EVERYTHING you said flashed through my head. Like I said, I'm usually the responsible one. While my wife does support the household at the moment, she would be prone to spending without looking so she leaves the money to me. I don't know that I'd classify this as an impulse buy because I spent hours researching this guitar, and even showed her the auction and asked her if we could do it. She said yeah, but we shouldn't and advised me to sell my stuff first. Then the angel and the devil on my shoulders went to war, and unlike in Animal House, the devil won out, ha ha.

If we needed the cash, I'd sell this guitar in a heartbeat because as you said, the family comes first. They always will, and while Aceman and everyone else seem to be able to see my future, lol, I'm going to sock the money to cover this guitar, the Fernandes Ravelle I recently got, and a lot more in the bank account. I just have to hide this f'er until I do so I can say "oh, I sold my crap and look what I bought honey!!!!!" Ha ha, I'm dead meat. At least she works during the day and I'm home so when it comes, I can conceal it.

#1...in the process
#2...did that too many times already. Won't fly.
#3...I like the way you think.
#4...the most likely scenario if the guitar is discovered. Two of the bases are covered already. I'll let you guess which two. Together for 19 years so one must be obvious?
