Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

They're legendary and the tone I desire for. You don't know how much I would love to one day own either an OR120, OTR80, or OD120. Granted with the Green cab would look out of place, at least I would have a signature rig. Just for me, that low end tone is just so hard to describe. I just fell in love with it when I heard Cathedral's "Endtyme" and Sleep's "Holy Mountain".

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Interesting. My Local AGENT, doesn't think they're 'that' good, but that for the money... Hence the question.

Me, I just wish they weren't, well.... Orange!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

their not the same as the 70's flavor of orange amps.....the modern orange's are more marshall flavored:chairshot

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

It strikes me, because they're more of a "niche" product, you either love them or hate them. I love them, and having gassing after several Orange amps for quite some time.

BTW, you can order them in black tolex, or go with Matamp, who will cover it in whatever you want.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

They're the best amps out there if you ask me...both the old 70's ones and the new modern ones. They don't mess around with any superfluous features...usually just one or two simple channels to rock out with. Not to mention, if you take the stage with a big bright orange box of speakers, everybody takes notice...

Interesting comments so far! Please keep 'em coming.

Incidentally, and please let's not change the thread too much. What's necessarily wrong with them being a 'bit Marshally'?

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

I have a Tiny Terror and it cuts through like nobodies business! An incredible amp... the cabs crunch up so nicely too; they are perfect cabinets.

The bigger amps are just ridiculous!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

either you like them or dunno what to do with that tone.
i love and desire them

:headbang:

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

The title of this string says it all.

What's your take on Orange Amps?

I just checked out the video reviews from Guitar World and wow, the Tiny Terror and Thunderverb are cool. The Thunderverb is regularly priced for being a 200W tube amp, but the TT is a heck of a value! Also, I think I desire a 2x12" to run my amp though.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

here are my thoughts. I have only listened to lots of clips and read lots of reviews. I have not played any oranges yet.

1) wattage over 100 watts is not really useable. You would have to get an attenuator to get that tube breakup sound that is desireable. also a 2x12 cab is going to be more than loud enough.
2) the OR-80 reissue is pretty cool. takes pedals well. but does not have alot of distortion so you are going to get the diode clipping from your pedal.
3) the rockerverb series for the dirty channel does not take well to any pedals.
4) the rockerverb series has an effects loop, but the loop is not assignable to the channels.
5) for the 30 watter amps rocker and AD you are not going to get that heavy bass chug that you get from the 50watters.
6) the reliability for the rockerverbs is horrible, according to stonerrock.com users and harmony central reviews
7) mars volta and the emo bands love the orange amps (uggh)
8) orange amps are extremely expensive when compared to a used ampeg or mesa .50 caliber+ that would get you near the same sound.

I wont be making any decisions soon, but the amps that I want consist of the OR-80 reissue, the rockerverb 50, and the Sunn model T reissue, the dual recto, mesa .50 caliber and the mark IV mesa (sigh). If the Sunn has the effects loop I am looking for I would probably choose that. Ill pose my sunn question in an additional thread.

Hey, I like The Mars Volta and i'm not emo. Yet I agree on some of those things such as the Rockverb reliability which is why I stick to the single channel amps such as the OR120. The funny thing about two hundred watter is that even though the Thunderverb is pretty damn expensive. You can still get Marshall Major for 1600 or even less in some areas.

200 WATTS TUBE??????????? MAN that'd SWEET!! Say buh bye to the drummer's day of being the loudest!

I've read quite a few reviews and heard them and MAN, they look good. If they had 50W tube amps that weren't so expensive I'd buy one! They sound incredible, and like someone said earlier, the Orange tolex KICKS ASS! And stands out!!

If you're thinking of buy one, you have some good thoughs in your head!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

two hundred watts isn't unusable. Kyle from Earthride uses an Orange OR-200 paired with Matamp GTO-120 without a hotplate and he gets away with it.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Ok, but at full tilt you basically eclipse everyone else! And im sure he doesn't use it all the ****ing way up!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

2 words: hearing damage

2 more words about too much headroom: no tone

This man speaks the truth. Al from Om(bass player) uses two 200 watt Electrics(Matamp) through two 4x15 and some other cabs. And I am scared to think about the amount of wattage that Sunn O))) use live.

EDIT: and about the 'using it all the way up', I am willing to bet every band I listed uses full volume.

bass is a different animal - 200w does not get you that far. I bet they turn it all the way up - great tone, but I would not want to be on stage subjecting my ears to that. I bet when they have full stacks or lots of cabs they only plug in 1 cab and the rest are dummy cabs

As far as OM? Pfft, Al runs two 4x15's and two 4x12's (the Lemmy setup) with a Matamp custom Jericho head, and two other Orange Slave Units. There is nothing dummy about it. Getting within twenty feet of stage at the show, you need to shove two earplugs in each ear. As far as two hundred not being enough for bass. I don't know, while I have my doubts, High on Fire's George Rice used an Orange and Matamp AD200 head just through a 4x15 and I was able to hear him perfectly.
