Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

what kind of amps are those anyway? they look pretty small for that cab, ad-30?

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

I have a single channel AD30 head and love it.

I set the amp slightly crunchy and then use pedals (ODs and Boosts) to take the gain wherever I want it to go.

I'm contemplating getting a 2nd 1x12 cab so I can pair the slightly crunchy Orange with my super clean and 'sparkly' sounding Carlsbro 50-Top head to get the best of both worlds :)

I have some clips of my Orange rig at www.myspace.com/forthisdaymusic.com

The left channel is my Orange through a Marshall 4x12 and the right channel is a Vox AC30 CC2 through a Marshall 2x12 cab.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

I play an Orange Rockverb 50 in the studio! And they are awesome.Gain on 5 and a rocktron rampage in front of it (gain on 0) can bring you to heaven.
It's a tad loose for my tastes ,wich leads me more to an Engl Fireball ,but that thing has balls ,definition ,clarity.only the Bottom is a tad loose ,but that can be a really good thing for slow ,stomping riffage ,and nice searing leads!
Orange is a great company.they know what they do!

If you need more persuasion to get one, check out this clip

Iommi hated Orange. The only time he ever used them is for that video shoot, and that's only because they were already on the stage when he got there. If you want the Sabbath sound go buy a Laney.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

I had a 30wt 1x12 combo that was great just wished I had picked up the 2x12 it just couldn't cut it up against drums.

I'd look seriously at getting a full Orange rig if I had the ducets.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Could I have your thoughts on the Orange Rockerverb 50 212 Combo? A used one (but in new condition) just became available for sale locally..Would it be suitable for old-school raunchy 70's rock 'n roll/punk a la Stooges, New York Dolls and Sex Pistols, etc? I read previously about reliability issues..What are they? Is this amp worth $1500 CAD used?

i've played one (combo) and like it quite a bit. the distortion turned up was a very convincing alice in chains vibe (dark + heavy) so i'd be willing to bet you could get a good 70's vibe with just turning down the gain. I never really got to crank the amp cause i was at guitar center but it sounded pretty good at reasonably low volumes.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

They're legendary and the tone I desire for. You don't know how much I would love to one day own either an OR120, OTR80, or OD120. Granted with the Green cab would look out of place, at least I would have a signature rig. Just for me, that low end tone is just so hard to describe. I just fell in love with it when I heard Cathedral's "Endtyme" and Sleep's "Holy Mountain".

Sorry for going OT !!!

Any SLEEP albums you can recommend ?

I heard only good things of this (unknow to me !) band !!!

Alot. It's been a long time since I last played through a Bassman, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

The AD30 has very British sounding overdrive.... punchy and crunchy.

The Bassman has very American sounding overdrive.... more thumpy, with a tendancy towards farting out when used near it's maximum.

The AD30 is more like a Vox AC30 than a Bassman.... although it doesn't really sound like a Vox either.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

The guitar magazine here praised one of (or their only?) 100 watt head and cab.

The color is cool though :)

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Orange has a tone of their own that I've heard described as somewhere between Hiwatt and Fender. I've yet to rock a Hiwatt, so I can't really comment on them.

The thing is that they have a bit of a raw, fuzzy edge to their tone. Not quite clean, yet not quite dirty. People who rock them tend to rock them for their extremely loud overdrive that won't quite distort... hence their popularity with throwback styles (Stoner/Doom) and stompbox heavy styles (Shoegaze).

Rockers are different of course. They're filling their own niche (British high gain).

ATT DAISY :

. . . what will get me closer to an AD30/50 for Stoner/Doom ???

A) Marshall JTM45 clone

. . . OR . . .

B) Fender Bassman Tween clone

. . . OR . . .

C) Fender Blackface cllone ! ????

I am in the market for an amp (more pwerfull tan my Blues Jr, for the above mentioned genre's) and want to get a GREAT TONE !!!

Any help from YOU, and anyone else Very Welcome !!!

Many thanx to all !

(don't worry about the Laney and Hiwatts, they only used that on the first record. The Matamps they didn't acquire 'till after this album. So what you are hearing an Orange OR-120's and slave models cranked).
Here is a sample of what you can expect on the album Holy Mountain. Very Sabbath/Blue Cheer like. Pick up that and Dopesmoker. Be warned though, Dopesmoker you will either love or hate. For me, it is a religious experience.

Between those models I really can't help. I've never used a tweed Bassman or a JTM45. All I can really say is that none of those amps are particularly popular in either of those scenes. All I can suggest is getting your hands on whatever is available and rocking it loud with a guitar that's similar to yours.

Obviously the JTM45 will sound more British than either of the Fenders and I believe it's the British flavour of amp that you're after.

Off topic: Nothing like a little Atomic Bitchwax to brighten up a rainy Sunday.

Here.... listen to the Les Paul Heavy clips.

The JTM45 sounds very AC/DC.... which isn't odd considering that's what they used early on.

The Bassman has a much different tone... you can hear the shift in midrange and the more glassy top end of the 6L6s in the clip.

You'll also notice that the AD30 doesn't really sound like either of them.... though I don't really like the sound of that guitar through the AD30 as it sounds a little weak. I think it'd sound better with a Super Distortion IMO.
