Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

They're cool amps, but there are some pretty significant differences between the original orange amps and the modern-era versions.

The original orange amps definitely had their own thing going, different from both Hiwatt and Marshall. Loud and open, but not quite as balanced and sparkly as a Hiwatt, and not as upper-mid aggressive as a Marshall. British-sounding, but different.

The modern Oranges are, for the most part, a lot closer to a Marshall tone than their predecessors. They don't sound exactly like Marshalls, but are much more toward that sound.

Yeah... 'ya know, that's one of the things that REALLY bugs me about the "new" Orange amps.

I like the old ones because they ARE different then anything else.

Check out the band "Hum" for some slayin' old Orange tone.

"Downward is Heavanward" is a great record... produced & engineered by my good friend Mark Rubal. "You'd Prefer an Astronaught" is also a great listen...check out the tune "Stars" for some REAL tone.

Every rock guitar player should have a 'Hum' record in their collection.

Cool, I'll hunt them down!

I've lost track on here!

Whoever it was that said the Orange has a fuzzy edge to it's clean. Thanks. That's definately NOT something I'm into.

I think you've converted me most definately to HI-WATT in this thread.

Cheers

Yeah man....

Everyone on this board should hunt 'em down.

Allmusic Guide to "The Hum"

They're a MONSTEROUS sci-fi "guitar rock" band from the '90s.

Criminally unknown.

Couldn't get arrested on what very sadly passes as "rock" radio these days.

HUGE cult following.

HUGE.

I found hum's music downloads here:

sound pretty good!

makes me want to get a big monster amp from the late 60s. When I come to think of all the doom/stoner bands I think of high wattage amps like ampeg v4, orange OR120, matamp, and "electric amps". amps that give you that huge cathedral door shutting in your face sound. lots of bass, good for drone tones and 1000 pound round sound. I love queens of the stone age and they are using those Ampeg VT-22 combo amps. before they used the ampeg V4 for Kyuss which is really affordable - I might look into that one day. Im definitely not getting a vintage sunn model t for the crazy 1,500$ they are going for!!!

They're okay, but they're not red.

and they are not green.

Re: Orange - I'm hearing very mixed reviews!

Right on.

Yeah, I dunno about the later stuff & all the live material because they used lots of everything just like the rest of us.

But those two records, "Astronaught" & "Heavenwards..." were like, 92.7356% 'old' Orange heads through Orange & late '60s straight-front Marshall cabs.

Well... maybe it was more like 74.5973% Orange... but you get the idea.
