Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

I recently bought a 76 Explorer that I love. The bridge pup is a Seymour Duncan but I had no Iidea which model.

I have wanted to try a Pearly Gates in one of my guit's for quite a while and I figured that the Explorer would be the operfect candidate.

I gigged the Explorer for the first time Monday and received an incredible response from members of the audience and members of my band. They told me that my lead tone was amazing. I was using the bridge pup the whole time.

Tonight I was playing the guitar and really listening. The bridge pup just continues to blow me away. I made up my mind to keep the pup, which ever model Duncan it may be.

About an hour ago my curiousity got the best of me. I yanked the bridge pup out of the guitar and to my surprise it is a Pearly Gates!! It seems that I had what I wanted all along. When I first played the guitar at the music store it was the tone of the bridge pup that caught my attention in the first place.

Isn't it cool how things work out

Sorry for the long-winded post but I haven't been this happy about a pup in my 20 years of playing. This is what I've been hearing in my head.

Thanks for listening

Brilliant!
I love the PGs as well - got a set in a Les-Paul and they just sing!

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

I have a PG/Jazz-combo in my Basswood ESP.

The PG sounds too high-middy and sharp and the Jazz too thin to me...

Billy Gibbons' tone is awesome tho. PG seems to work fine in a mahogany guitar.

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

The PG set is just amazing. If you haven't tried a pair in a Les Paul, you are missing out!

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

I love the PG in both Les paul positions and myself and Doc Barlo like the PG+ in the bridge spot of a strat...The PG+ is really just an A5 version of the PG built for Fender's needs...The PG has great cutting mids..

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

I kind of think of the PG+ as being a 59B only with unbalanced coils...which results in a brighter, more open mid range tonality. Agree? Disagree? Lew

The PG is an unbalanced coil pickup I think right Lew? Duncan claims that the PG+ is a "slightly" hotter wound PG but with an A5 magnet..This allowed the PG pickup to mate better with the stock Fender middle pickup and the bit of extra winding gave the in between position a bit more output...And yes, this is an ungodly bright pickup in my alder/maple strat! But it cuts right through everything! :13: Currently this pickup isn't in any of my guitars, but I keep stuff in case my ears change, and they always do! :32:

Right on LEW! It's that clarity in the wound strings that only an un-balanced humbucker seems to possess!

Yep...that's why I still prefer the 59B or 59 Trembucker. Haven't tried my new EVH/78 yet...I've been on a Tele binge for a while! Lew

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

The PGb has a lot of personality. It is not quite for me but I recommend it highly for those who's style will fit the tone.

I think if your daughter can master a Tele she'll probably be able to get a good tone on just about any guitar. They're a challenge...but worth the effort. Lew

Hey guys,

Sorry to butt in on your thread Laroosco, but I was just wondering how much different a Tele Sounds compared to a Strat? As I'm thinking about buying a MIJ Fender Tele, but don't know how much use it would get compared to my Strat? Do they really sound that much different to a Strat?

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

Teles sustain alot better than a Strat because of the "string through body" design (no vibrato with tone sucking springs attached to it) and they also have a stronger tone from the bridge pickup because the bridge pickup is attached directly to the bridge baseplate. Also, the bridge pickup on a Tele has a metal plate waxed to the bottem of the bobbin which gives about 5% more bass and mids without affecting the treble. Also, a Tele has no middle pickup...the magnetic polepieces of that middle pickup on a Strat pull the string slightly out of tune. Without the middle pickup, the strings rings longer and with more purity on the Tele. It's mostly the neck and middle pickups on a Strat that pull the strings out of tune...one less pickup means one less set of magnets pulling the strings out of tune. The one thing I DO NOT LIKE about any stock Tele is the neck pickup with a metal cover...the metal cover muffles the tone. The neck pickup on both of my Teles is the Fralin Blues Special. It has no cover and sounds ALOT better to me: more like a Strat neck pickup. Lew

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

Sorry, did no care for the PGn at all. I ended up putting and A5 in it, which has made it satisfactory, but not ideal.

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

Hey Laroosco. Glad you like the Pg in the explorer. I have a pair installed in my explorer. Waiting for a chance to gig it with some volume, but they sound great in the apt. Lotta growl and clarity.

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

its funny you guys are talking about a tele pup in the pg appreciation thread, ive been sayng for a while how much i think a pgb is liek a good tele pup. the more you know how to work the volume and tone controls the more youll like the pup.

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

I love the PG! Best pickup I've had in a while. I think I like them even better than than the Seth's. :saeek:

Almost... :blackeye:

Re: Pearly Gates appreciation Thread.

Gigged the Explorer last night and the PG worked GREAT. Sounded amazing.

I understand the comparison to a Tele pup completely.
