Pearly Gates little more output.

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

Valid point, but think about this: While the PGN gets all kind of love and respect here, the PGB does not get quite as much praise. Popular, yes, worshipped like a PGN, no. And the popularity the PGB does have, is clearly related to it being paired with a very popular neck PU. When you look for used PU's, there's always far more PGB's being sold than PGN's. If a PGB's tone is changed a little by a magnet, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

uh?? the PGB not worshipped? can't imagine that. I love the PGB better than the PGN.but I'm just weird.

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

IMO high outputs react differently. Whether that's to your preference is a personal one. But I do like the percussiveness and fast attack that a higher output pickup can give.

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

I was able to get good tones from the Pearly Gates Bridge. I hate the Screamin' Demon and didn't care for the 59.

Both have plenty of fans. All I'm saying is that the PGB's bridge tone isn't quite as revered as the PGN's neck tone, so tweaking a PGB with a magnet is no big deal. That's all boys.

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

The PG bridge is as equally fantastic as the neck. I just happen to dig ceramic in the neck.

I think the PG plus will do what the OP wants, honestly. Is the PG+ JUST an A5? Or does it have some wind changes to maintain the PG mojo....I wouldn't be surprised.

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

The PG+ is wound differently than the PG. It's not just a different mag. The extra windings gives it more guts and oomph but that also increases the mids. I guess Duncan felt like the A5 would bring the tone back a bit closer to the original PG.

seymourduncan pickup booster. also whats wrong with cranking your gain? if it sounds good it is good. dont worry about the numbers on the dial.

My PGn is driving me crazy. Great lead tone for solo's, terrible, terrible muddyness on the low E and A. Arrrrrgh!

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

Pearly Gates but hotter is the Rio BBQ IMHO. This along with the PGn ended my search. The BBQ is my current favorite bridge pickup and is what the PGb should have been all along.

I put an A3 in my PGN to get more treble and down play the loose low end. And A4 or UOA5 would also help.

+1. BBQ is a great bridge PU. Not a PAF, but it packs a punch. Warm and full.

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

Hello,

I love Pearly Gates HBs on my strat, to me they're the perfect pickup but I'm looking to get a little more gain out of them. I know the simple answer is just keep playing them if they're perfect but I don't want to crank the amp's gain (PT100) to 8 or 9 all the time for leads. So is there a pickup that at least comes close to the PG with more gain? I was told no because if you wind it for more gain..you'd lose what makes the PG so great.

I've tried Suhr pickups and didn't like them at all. Haven't tried Dimarzio's Super Distortion but was told it's like the Duncan Distortion which I like as well. :headbang: custom or boutique pickups are too clean and clear for me and end up sounding fake to my ears. I like the dirt, filth and grit from Duncan and Dimarzio. I also love a vowel type of tone..not too much like the pickups Satriani uses but a little bit of that vowel type of sound.

So far my favorite pickups are in order:
1. Pearly Gates (if they had more gain i'd put them in all my guitars)
2. Duncan Distortion
3. Evolutions
4. Little 59s

Is there such a pickup as PG with more gain or at least one that comes close to it? Please let me know.

It is different but you'd be surprised how similar the PG and the Custom Shop 78 are!

A few years back a buddy of mine and I did a little mini Duncan Bucker shoot out...my R8 with Antiquities, his R8 with a Seth neck and a 78 bridge and my 1982 Moderne with Pearly Gates neck and bridge...as soon as I tried his 78 I said it reminded me of my PG bridge with a little more...he quickly agreed!

Is it the same...no, is it close...yep!

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

But i spent HOURS trying to dial a sound that would convince my girlfriend that a JB (DD w/A5) could do thrash on my rig.

You wouldn't happen to live in your parents basement, would you?

Re: Pearly Gates little more output.

Keep in mind the origonal PGb in Billy`s LP was an A5 magnet, SD put an A2 in it to replicate the weakened magnet, I put a polished UOA5 in my PGb and it has pretty much the same tone just more punch and more articulation than the A2. Pair it all up with CTS 550K XL vol and tone pots and you will be where you want.

Are you sure about this? i ask because seymour "dun ages" or deguasses alnico mags to achieve age? why didnt he simple age the A5?
to me a A2 sounds NOTHING like a aged A5?:28:
Anyone else agree?
