Pearly gates plus

Re: Pearly gates plus

What's everyone's thoughts on this pickup? Do you leave it stock or do you change out the magnets?

I put an A2 in mine. sounds like a regular Pearly Gates with a little more low end - a little fatter. doesn't turn it into a Custom Shop '78, but it does have that hot-rodded vintage feel

Re: Pearly gates plus

i prefer the alnico II magnet, but i prefer a pearly gates over a 59b too

Re: Pearly gates plus

Depends on the guitar for me. In a LP, I'd rather have the PGb. In a semi, the tighter, brighter nature of the PG+ is more pleasing to my ears.

Re: Pearly gates plus

I've got a pearly gates plus in the bridge of my les paul special right now and it sounds pretty good. Dpes the regular pearly gates have a little more bottom end to it? I was wondering about swapping the magnet to an A2 to see if would add a tad more bottom to it. I do really like the sound of the pickup but wouldn't mind just a little more on the bottom

Re: Pearly gates plus

I think it sounds great in a Strat or similar guitar. It's like a fuller '59b, made especially for guitars that aren't big, heavy logs like Les Pauls.

A2 will add more low and high mids but remove some of the lower bass frequencies. it sounds thicker to my ears because of boosted low mids and slight roll-off in the highs but if you're looking for more of the really low frequencies you'd be better off with A8.

Re: Pearly gates plus

really? i think just the opposite. the pg+ has more bottom for sure but the pg sounds thicker/growlier to my ears

Re: Pearly gates plus

Let's have a growl-off then. The loudest and most discernibly growly growl wins.

On a side note, I tried out a Fender Strat with a Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge, and compared it to a Hamer Studio single-cut (basically a Les Paul with a Duncan '59 set). The bridge positions on both guitars sounded remarkably similar!

Now I know that the Pearly Gates Plus and the '59b are quite similar pickups, but I wouldn't have guessed that the Pearly Gates Plus would sound so full in a Strat. These were both being played clean, by the way, on a Dr. Z combo and a Roland Cube.

Since then, I've decided that the Pearly Gates Plus is really one of Duncan's best humbuckers.

The PG+ has always sounded thicker to me, the standard PG (which I'm a big fan of) is not a PAF that I would call thick, that upper mids snarl seems more dominant than in it's Fender-ized A5 cousin. I guess we'll agree to disagree.
