PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I had an Ultra 120... was fun. Moved pn to a 5150II. Was more fun. Then I found an almost mint JCM800 2204... side by side, the 50 watt Marshall just flat out ate the 120 watt pesvey in punch and balls. That's when I discovered more gain does not equal better lol. I'll always have a soft spot for Peavey, but they're not what they used to be.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I rocked a 1978 or so Classic twin with built-in phaser for a couple years in the mid 1980s that sounded great. I only got rid of it because it was heavy as hell and I wanted a separate head & cab. My brother bought one built in the 1980s with built-in chorus and it sounded like crap.
Also played a 1x12 Studio Pro for a few months. Had a sound guy tell me he really liked my guitar tone! Plugged straight into the Classic, used a comp pedal for solos with the Studio Pro.

I once saw the Screaming Trees with Gruntruck and Alice in Chains in Cleveland at their peak. The guy from Screaming Trees was playing a VTM half stack and had the best guitar sound out of the three bands. My friend who knew nothing at all about guitars or amps agreed that he sounded best that night.

I've had a Classic 50 head, a couple of XXX's, a Windsor and a 412MS cab, well I still have the cab. They were all quality amps, that did right by me. The Windsor cab was kind of crappy but it didn't stay around too long.

Only issue I ever had was a resistor grid failure on the XXX combo which they covered, less the Winged C's :17:

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Growing up, the other player in our band of 16 yr olds had a Peavey Roadmaster head and 2 4x12 cabinets. Beast of an amp for sure and sounded great. That got my eyes open to Peavey.
Then...next band I went on the road with, the other guitarist had Mace head with the HUGE 4x12 cabinet. OMG! that thing sounded great. Big and a PITA to haul, but always sounded good.
So I landed a Classic 30 and it was okay for a while until I heard a raging Delta Blues 1x15. It had none of the deficits I felt the C30 had. Had to have one for myself and I do. Great club amp with a fat bottom.
Then...I went into my local music store a few years back and what did I spy? A Mace head. Had to have it and I still do, but OMG there is a lot of glass to replace when it goes south.

If you hate on Peavey Amps, you re an @$$hole, and idiot, or cork sniffer. It's like Glock - you don't have to love it, but moo excuse for hating. Just not valid.

You forgot choad, doorstop, paper weight, butt munch, and jackwagon.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I had a Bandit for years. To this day, it is a solid choice. It has decent distortion, and takes pedals well on the clean channel. It sounds great miked up into a PA. I wouldn't hesitate to use one again.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I've only had a few amps over the years with a 1978 Marshall JMP 50W 2x12 w/UK made Greenbacks in it being one of my favorites. I recently had a Marshall JTM 50 Tremolo Reissue 2x12 with UK made Greenbacks in it and it was equally impressive as the JMP. Different tones but each being beautiful in it's own way.

That said; I had to run pedals to get into anything other than Blues tones with each amp. After parting with all my gear during a divorce I picked up a 1992 Peavey 5150 Combo and very soon after put away all my pedals due to lack of need for overdrive or distortion. Cleaning up the sound of the 5150 simply requires a turn of the volume knob on the guitar. As for true clean tones and reverb, well, that's where the 1994 Blues Classic Combo comes in - especially since the Celestion Fullback speaker upgrade and acquisition of the 2x12 extension cab. ;)

1992 5150 Combo w/80's Mesa Boogie 2x12 Cab loaded w/Celestion Ipswich, UK G12T-75 Speakers & 1994 Blues Classic Combo with upgraded Celestion Fullback and a JTM Style 2x12 Cab loaded w/Vintage Chicago 1968 Jensen C12N Speakers.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

A used 5150/6505 is probably the best bang-for-your-buck metal amp you can get, I love mine.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Did it have the 4 button selector switch that goes with that?

Unfortunately no. I'm always on the lookout for a Combiner footswitch though. They are way pricey, but eventually I'll find a deal on one. They do help to use the amp properly a lot.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Love/hate. First bass amp... It worked but that was it. Someone gave me a classic chorus for keyboards... Fine for keys but way too clean for guitar.

However my primary performance amp for mahagoney bodies is a classic 50 4*10. Superb clean and crunch but will not tolerate pedals.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I have a TNT130 bass amp. Got it for less than $200. It's sturdy, tones good and it'll play a bar or smaller room. For when I want louder, I use a Firebass 700 through a 4x10 and 2x15.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I had a Windsor head for awhile.. If I had the playing chops, it woulda been a great amp. Not real versatile, but it did the straight up AC/DC/punk rock thing very well..My Ultra Plus covers alot of ground.. Id love to score a 5150 plus/6505 one day.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I'm still waiting to find a used vtm somewhere... 5150/6505 are awesome. An old butcher would be cool too.

Heh, I've got a 5150II and a butcher, and I'm about to trade for a sig 5150. Still holding out for a VTM120 someday too.

Oh yeah, I use a bandit 65 for this punk band I'm doing because there isn't room in the space for a big amp. It was good enough for entombed and rotten sound to record with, it's good enough for me.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

The place we are practicing these days has some horrifically fatty peavey bass stack. But yeah - TNT and TKO's? Pretty cool.

What did PeterBaltesfrom Accept use? His tone was killer...

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Several bass players I have played with over the years used Peavy bass amps. When I think of Peavy, I think of good workhorse bass amps.
