PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I had a Deuce way back in the 80s when I was a teenage garage band denizen.
I never got super satisfying tones out of it, but I wasn't a great player either.
It was DEFNINTELY way more power, size, weight, and loudness than I needed.

I am still not a great player, but at least I'm not as dumb.
Playing a Vox AC4 now, semihollow guitar, and totally different taste in music. I sound better than I did back then.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

My experience with Peavey amps has been absolutely stellar.

I toured and recorded with an original 5150 head into a Mesa cab for years and got consistently killer tone. I sold it after buying my holy grail head...a 1979 JMP 2204, which I paired with a 1981 100 watt 1982b cab loaded with blackbacks. The JMP head got stolen a year later and, acting on the advice from my amp tech, I got a VTM60. It was ugly as anything, but it sounded crazy good. I was able to get the same tone that I got with the JMP! I got rid of all my gear a few years later after starting a family. I got some more gear a few years after getting rid of everything.

Now I have two rigs, both of which are KILLER in the bands I'm in:

1. Windsor head into a 1982a cab loaded with x-patterned G12H100 and Veteran 30 speakers.

2. JCM 2000 DSL100 head into a 1960a loaded with x-patterned G12M70 and G12T70 speakers.

Peavey amps in the right hands and bands are mighty good amps.

I'd love to try the Ultra, it seems like a lot of fun.
Tried a bunch of those small bandits way back in high school some 14 years ago. They were alright for what they were, I guess. I liked them back then, but I also liked my MetalZone, so not exactly a reliable source.
Absolutely hated the 5150/6505 when I tried it in a shop. Scooped, fizzy and noisy. Can't remember what cab it was running, though, so might not be entirely the amp to blame.

I think Steve Morse sounded his best using his Peaveys. His ENGLs sound more like Marshalls, to me.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Lol, its funny this thread was on top when I logged!!!

I just picked this up today!
20170920_194452.jpg

It's a older 90's USA made model & I picked it up on the cheap locally this afternoon. It's actually in really good shape apart from some rust on the send & return jacks but changing those out is easy & cheap enough.

I plugged straight into it with my Les Paul for a while when I got home this evening to give it a good second look. I'd almost forgotten how great these things sound & what a great value they are!!!

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

I still have my silver stripe Bandit from late 90's, and it still works like a champ. It's traveled around to numerous gigs and jams, and was used in my son's punk band for over a year. It's the most reliable amp I've ever owned, and sounds great too.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

How the heck do you manage to get rust on your amp jacks?

I don't know??? As I said I had just bought it before making my initial post...

The guy that I bought it from was the original owner & he said that he hadn't played in years so I imagine it was in storage for quite some time? In any case it all works perfectly & that rust is on the jack nuts more than the jacks themselves so it's an easy, albeit purely aesthetic, fix.....

Sorry for the $hity pic... Getting my phone out & emailing myself the picture so I can post it seemed like a lot of work & I'm feeling kinda lazy today. Good day to play around with the new toy!!!

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

As it turns out 95% of my "rust" was just grimy dust & came it right off when I cleaned up the chassis/panel this morning so I guess I don't really have rusty effects loop jacks after all? I also pulled the chassis this morning with fingers crossed that there's no leaky electrolyics inside & there wasn't!!! I was actually kinda surprised by how well that thin old PCB & the filter caps have held up over the years...

The amplifier sounds absolutely fantastic, I'm really happy with this one!!! I mean I'd originally bought it with the intention of selling it in my Reverb store to try & make a few bucks off it but I'm really digging it's tone so I just might have to keep it? I ordered a new matched quad of EL84's for it last night & I've got preamp tubes coming out of my ears so we'll see once I get those in. Right now it's got three of the original Sov-Tech's in it's power section along with a single random J.J. & at some point someone stuck a Grove Tube 12AX7 in V2....

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Yeah i have a jsx head on a 5150 cab and i also have a red stripe bandit.

No complaints from them at all.

Roadmaster: One of the sweetest crunch, and bodily clean amps ever IMO. Add an OD and it roars 80's metal. I love this amp.

MX VTX: I use this one as a power amp for my AMT SS-11B and my main gigging amp. The amp itself doen not sound bad at all!

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Anybody watch the show "Undercover Boss"? Last year they did an episode on Peavey with a real surprise ending. Might want to check it out.

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

Sweaty guitar fingers touch them when plugging in / unplugging and you never ever wipe the jack off.

Most of the perceived corrosion was just grimy dust build up, likely mixed with sweat from the former owners fingers as Ace stated? It wasn't anything a damp rag, a little elbow grease, & a Dremel couldn't fix. I was also able to get 90% of the tweed free of stains by wiping it down with the same damp rag after pulling the chassis out...

Re: PEAVEY Amps appreciation...

What's the deal with the Windsor heads? GC has a few used ones for not too much cashola. Are they good, bad, or what?

Yeah, was pretty sad... Very nice what they offered, BUT.... Then to drop the bomb on the people

Depends what you want.. I had a Windsor for a bit and if you want an amp with a great AC/DC type crunch for punk or rock or.... It would be a killer amp...
