Peavey Classic Chorus 212

a friend of mine is a weekend struming guitarist that has been using a really awful 1980 SS Traynor amp for 28 years... that amp had a massive mid range spike to it that you could never shake... and it was never clean or distorted, always in the middle somehow... since he never played a lot he never bought better gear...

anyways yesterday we took a look in a local Pawn Shop and saw a bunch of junk... among the junk was 2 "nicer" SS amps for the prices they asked... anything would be better then that old traynor... anyways they had a late 80's/early90's Peavey SS Classic Chorus 212 for $200.... for this guy this amp is a major improvement in sound!!! i tried it out to make sure it worked before he paid the man and it's not that bad at all....

trying it out back at his house we found the footswitch cable has a short in it... seems the cable is shorting out right where it enters the footswitch... the amount of wire for this 3 button footswitch is insane... the plug is a 9 pin style-(i think 9 pin not sure)... i guess the quick fix is to cut the wire shorter and re-do all the connects inside the pedal...

But does anyone stock replacement wire and connectors for this type of connection?

and while i'm at it i wonder if Peavey carries a replacement footswitch so i'll send them an email as well...

let me know if you guys have any ideals, and imput, any thoughts

Re: Peavey Classic Chorus 212

As far as solid state amps go from that era the Classic Chorus was one of the better ones. They are very good clean amps and take pedals pretty well. I bet a tube based overdrive/distortion box would sound great in that thing.

I'd wager Peavey has footswitches for that amp. You can probably find them on ebay as well.

thanks for replying... ya this amp sounds great for a SS amp from it's era!!! playing some clean jazzy type stuff we were vibrating the furnace duct work in his house with the volume on 2... the overdrive is quite nice... lots of EQ and sound controlls... the amp is quite midrange heavy but backing that off to about 2 on the dial you can easily get a modern heavy distorted tone... there is a push switch to get "extra extra" gain and i wish that function was on the footswitch... it works better then any OD pedal would infront of the amp...

i really like the way Peavey put the Effects loop on the front panel of this amp!!!!

for this guy this is the best amp he could of bought for the $200 locally right now... i hope it lasts trouble free for a while... you always take your chances buying old SS amps from pawn shops...

once we get a footswitch working for him he'll be able to use the chorus effect... i can't believe there is no button on the amp itself to active the effect

Re: Peavey Classic Chorus 212

I owned a Peavey 212 chorus amp in the eighties, and owned it until about 1995.That's when I got into TUBE AMPS . The peavey amp was a pretty darn good amp and served me well. You know, I could never figure out the stigma against "Peavey" anyway. They've always built a solid decent sounding amp for the average joe. Heck, Skynard has used their amp since the early 70's, and they still use their amps today!

ya Peavey amps have served me well.... at least the tube models i own have served me extremely well... and the older SS amps like this Classic Chorus 212 have always been great amps for some uses for sure... i'm not sure what model it was but about 13 years ago i was at the Peavey warehouse here near Toronto... they had a bunch of old amps in a room beside the office... in it was some sort of 2x12 solid state chorus amp from the 90's and man did it sound rich and nice clean....

Oddly Peavey amps do not have a very high resale value around here... that suits me fine as i can buy them used at a big discount... i see used 1990's Classic series tube amps selling for low coin all the time... them make good gigging amps...
