Peavey classic head?

Well my dream rig is a JTM45 and a 2x12 (greenbacks). Its just a little bit out of my price range so I was going to go with bassman RI. I remember enjoying a Peavey classic 212 and was about to buy it but came back to the shop and it was sold. Welp, I dont know much about these amps any help would be great. I think it will work out for me better if I do it like this rather than getting an expensive bassman i would end up having to sell.

Re: Peavey classic head?

They're good amps, but they came in two versions, 4 EL-84's or 2 6L6's.
The EL-84 one has a chimier clean tone, but the 6L6 version had tighter low end and a better gain channel........as I recall from playing them years ago.

I really like the Peavey Classics because they hold their own against Fender's cleans, but I think Peavey's gain channels are much better than the Fender Deville gain channels. The Bassman is just a loud clean amp that has to be superloud before getting gainy. Classic 50 4-10 and 2-12's are a steal on the used market. So are the heads.

Re: Peavey classic head?

The Peavey classics are nice workingman's amps and you can get 'em dirt cheap. The EL84 models are pretty good and take pedals well.

I will say the Fender Bassman LTD models have a nice classic tone and you can jump the channels like an old Marshall. They really nail the classic tone and they have a nice classic sound with great Jensens that come stock. If you use any other Bassman Ri's make sure you try the hell out of them, many are tempermental with tone.

Re: Peavey classic head?

I have a Classic 50 head and a Classic 30 combo.... the head sounds better to me..... There is something different about it.... but i end up using the C30 a lot as it is portable.....

Re: Peavey classic head?

Would this head sound good with a 2 x 12 cab loaded with greenbacks. i like greenbacks because they seem to break up good with the jtm45 but not sure how they will sound with the peavey.

I use a peavey classic 50 212 with GB12s in it(greeback copies) I think they are very nice speakers in the classic. BTW, are you talking about the one at the Music Shoppe?

Re: Peavey classic head?

Here's a suggestion- First, let the Aceman take you through a time-space warp back to about the late 70's. The ORIGINAL Peavey classic. Not that newfangled version. It came in a 4x10 50 watt all tube bad-a mofo. Also available were 2x10, and/or 2x12's I believe - I had a 2x12. Sold it to go solid state. Saw the amp in a pawn shop years later - wish I had bought it back! Oh yes - reverb and and an awesome tremolo!

4 inputs, Normal, bright, series, & parellel. Each input ran through the tubes in the obvious ways: Normal = norm, bright w/ a treble boost, series for mega gain, and parellel for a really cool blend on both channels. Check one of those out if you can find one; Should be even cheaper and way cooler. I believe those were the reason they ressurected the classic line that you are talking about. Footswitch for channels and reverb and trem.
