IME and IMO, no, not really. It's a much better sounding amp.

NOT the Ultra....but it is VERY VERY VERY close to the Ultra PLUS since the XXX is based off the Ultra Plus.

when i had my old 120watt Ultra Plus Head Retubed and bias'd the tech said it was very similar to the XXX out on the floor of the shop...

i never got to use the ultra channel on my head because it was only footswitchable...WTF?

sold it for a $100 profit after getting it serviced

I had an old Ultra 120 and I have a Triple X 212. I would say that they are close, but the Triple XXX has a different response in its upper midrange. A bit more of the British flavor in the bite. Both sound pretty nice to me. The Triple X just seems a little more refined (I mean the amp, I don't think the tone would be considered "refined"....lol, its pretty mean sounding)

i have to get my A$$ to a Peavey dealer soon and try some of the newer amps out.... i have not played around with any new Peaveys in ages....

My Ultra 212 sounds much better to me than both the XXX and the 5150II, that I tried out a while back. The Ultra is thicker sounding even though it has half the power of either amp. I'd love to have an Ultra 120 head.

Did it sound better after the retube? Mine still has stock tubes. I know my classic 30 was alot better with better tubes

Ive wondered myself how much diff they are.. I know the ultra plus was the basis for the XXX
