Peavey vs Peavey

Took back the Bogner Alchemist because I decided I wanted a nicer guitar. I don't do solid state, so I picked up a Peavey Valveking 1x12 combo (it was within my budget and I don't trust the cheaper Fenders). Anyway, I'm a fan of "British style" amps and I was wondering if I should take the Valveking back and order a Windsor Studio.

Re: Peavey vs Peavey

go for a windsor and change out v1 for ANYTHING. the JJs in there are pretty harsh and wooly. personally i changed out my v1 for a 12at7 and v2 for a 12ax7c(both groove tubes), leaving a jj only in my phase converter spot. with just a tube change(and a broken in cabinet:smokin:) it's not a bad amp. if you're going for clean headroom otoh, you'll also want to change out the power tubes, their distortion is.... not harsh, but rather very 'hard' and lacking in dynamics.

Try before you buy because I can't say I've felt too inspired by the Windsor or Penta series by Peavey. I like the Classic series and JSX however.

Re: Peavey vs Peavey

I had a Peavy VK112 I recently sold off. The cleans were nice. I didn't care for the flavor of the gain channel however. It seemed to ramp up to too much gain too fast, but when I tried to back off the gain, it quickly became not enough. I didn't try different flavors of vacuum tubes or speakers in it, truthfully, putting the money into getting a better amp and tweaking that instead. The gain channel could very well be a speaker/tube/transformer change away from being awesome I just know that in stock form, it wasn't for me.

i think this is the opinion most everybody has of the valveking. great cleans, lame gain channel.

Re: Peavey vs Peavey

I think the JSX is a really good versatile amp in PV's line-up, the Classic series is good, if a bit generic, the VK's have a good clean channel, but not very good gain channel, the 6505s have great high-gain, but are lacking in cleans, and the Windsor is a pretty good cheap low-wattage/studio/bedroom amp.

I've found that there is definitely better out there than PV with a few exceptions like the JSX & 6505s, but for the price they're darn good. YMMV.

you mean the 25w windsor studio? 'cuz i've got a 100w windsor stack, and it's no bedroom amp(even though that's how i use it;))

What is the FX jumper mod? Just a short cable linking the two FX loop connectors together?
