Peavey Windsor?

What does it compare to Marshall wise? I've heard it compared to a JCM800. How does it sound?

I'm in a band now and I need more volume than my classic 30, but is 100 watts too big? Should I look for something 50 watts? We're playing metal, kind of hardcore type music, which is what the local "scene" enjoys, so it's loud.

Re: Peavey Windsor?

It's really a pretty decent sounding amp, definitely on par with most Marshalls.
It has more of that Marshall tone than the other Peaveys that have 6L6's.

I'm sure Wattage will say something, but you may want to PM him for detailed questions. To me, it sounds like a JCM800 with an extra diode gain stage, not too different from a Jubilee. The only downsides to the amp are that it's a single channel amp, and also that the circuit board might have cheap parts on it, which is fine for now.....but we'll see how they hold up over time. Peavey tends to be pretty rugged, but this one is made in China, so we'll see.

Re: Peavey Windsor?

I tried it at the store the other day and it sounded pretty good for the price but i'm not sure if it will work for hardcore metal. The texture control sucks. The more you turn it to "class A" the worse it sounds - not like a class a amp at all. It is best to leave it in the class ab setting. otherwise it sounds pretty good.

Re: Peavey Windsor?

It is in the same class as a JCM800. I used to have a JCM800 as well (don't remember the model but it was a 2-channel from the mid-eighties). It doesn't sound exactly the same but in the same ballpark. It holds up under gain and doesn't get muddy. Keep in mind that while this amp has about as much gain as the JCM800 I had, It isn't a 5150, XXX, or Mesa Triple Rect which have tons of gain. This amp is perfect for me, my band is sort of like Underoath mixed with Saosin and it does great for those styles. My best advice to you is to go out and play one before you make your decision.
P.S. This amp is LOUD.

I leave the texture knob at full AB. Moving towards A cuts out some tubes for better low volume tone, but it thins it out a lot. The AB is thick and meatier than a slaughter house.

Re: Peavey Windsor?

It is plenty loud but it doesn't have to be obscenely loud to get a good sound.

The EQ section has a pretty wide range, the Resonance & Presence are very reactive and useful as well. The Texture control works and if I get sometime to mess with it I am sure I'll get some good "A" settings but right now it is set full to the "AB" side.

Full gain gets a little fizzy IMO so if you'll run full out on the gain you might want to look at some different pre's. These are JJ's which generally I find a bit dark but they seem pretty well suited to the amp so far.

I really love the amp. I have used it for rehearsals for about a month now with no issues (about 4 hours 2x/wk) and it'll be making its first public appearance on the 14th. Jeremy should be there so we'll get a 2nd opinion on it. He threatened me with bodily harm if I brought my Line 6 back to Albany so I had to get something with tubes in it:butkick:

Re: Peavey Windsor?

I plugged into a Windsor combo at a shop a few weeks ago. It's a very nice, crunchy, tight sounding amp. There's plenty of gain available, and it stays focused and tight sounding even with lots of gain.

Re: Peavey Windsor?

The combo is quite a bit different. It is only a 15wt amp and is designed for studio use. I didn't realize they actually hit the shelves already. I think the little Vox will be sold to get one of those little Windsor combos.

Re: Peavey Windsor?

I'm VERY tempted with the combo... Hopefully they'll be under 200 british pounds and you can swap output tubes as you want... There's an inbuilt attenuator too. Woot.
