This amp sounds really cool as far as features go, and im a big fan of solid state amps.............Has anyone played one of thease or own one? I need some opinions please. Thanx alot!

Re: Peavey XXL head

hi there, i bought the XXL 2x12 because i sold my 4x12 cab, otherwise i would've walked away with the head...

i get instant tone gratification when i plug in any of my guitars into this amp. it has enough versatility to keep me occupied for hours. more importantly, it inspires me to practise & makes me a better player :)

if you want good gain from this amp it's the one to start with because IMO the distortion here is superb- from fusion to black metal, the XXL will oblige. the clean tones are also very impressive for single coils, i love hearing my P-90 through this amp!

Peavey is the name to look up to when it comes to solidstate technology these days. yes there are rivals out there but my $$$ goes to Peavey for constantly revising their philosophy to better their tone. nobody quite gives a hoot when it comes to non-tube tones but i'm darn glad i bought the XXL

Re: Peavey XXL head

the 2 gain channels sound pretty much the same though

Re: Peavey XXL head

3cent- each drive channel of the XXL has 3 seperate voicings, i can't quite understand how these would sound similar  unless you are refering to the XXX instead

Re: Peavey XXL head

Out of interest what kind of size gig would the 100watts cover? I play metal so need to be loud. Im not getting an amp soon but the XXL has caught my eye, having 3 channels and hearing good things about it.

Re: Peavey XXL head

Depending on the Amp, but generally 100 watts is all you'll need and then some. I've played 50 Watt amps that are incredibly loud.

nope, XXL. all 6 sounded pretty much exactly the same to me

Re: Peavey XXL head

hmm... maybe it's everybody's ears hearing different things... the Ultra drive channel is active, it sounds different (maybe to me) turned up compared to the Lead channel...

if you can hook up the XXL head to a 4X12 cab, then it'll be a menace. the 2X12 combo is enough to drown the drum from my experience & that's running it at only 50W (but it's a jam not a gig...)

Re: Peavey XXL head

I have it and i LOVE IT. it is great for playing rock in general. the ultra chanel i use for all my metal tone. it's great. there are 3 settings per channel, and then Loose, Middle, and Tight settings to thats 9 different tones per channel. the lead channel you can crank the gain put it on high gain and use it fo lead work, but i actually prefere to put it on high gain then turn the gain up 1/2 way and i get great classic rock tone(AD/DC-ish) or you can turn the gain down to like 2 and get tone similar to Jet in "Are you gonna be my girl". the clean channel is great for metallica stuss, you put it on vintage with some 'verb and you get great "One" tone, put it to Modern and it can play Fade to BLack w/o using you neck pickup. put it on warm and you get some nice Nothing Else matters tone. very versitile. i dont know what you want to play but really you can get w/e you want in this Head, well worth the cash :notworthy

i almost left out some stuff. the thing is plenty loud, i keep it on 100W no matter what because it sounds better for some reason. the ultra channel has more then enough gain, let me put it this way, my Boss Metal Zone i played w/ the gain all the way up, this amp i put it at about 1 oclock. this thing also makes it INSANELY easy to play harmonics like Zakk Wylde and such. one complaint i have about the amp is the Modern setting on the Ultra channel. it doesn't really sound that great. i mean it works for drop tunningsand it has pemanent scooped mids. the ultra setting on it does all the metal you need, turn the speakers to Loose, take all the mids out and you get great Cowboys From Hell tone, add a little mids and it gives you all them metal tone you need. okay i have another complaint...the footswitch. the buttons are really close together and it's plastic. i have to play with no shoes on when im on stage so i dont push the buttons in when im not supposed to...but thats prbly just casue i have a really wide foot.

it is more sensitve to EQing and has more gain. if it sounded the same as 3cent said peavey would not have even put it in the amp, that is why they offer the xxl supreme,it is the XXL minus a lead chanell
