Perfect neck

My perfect neck would be a slightly bigger (maybe 5%) version of my '87 USA Standard Strat's neck, but with the same old worn out feel of my 50's ES-175. I played a '62 Strat that was about 99% of what I'm describing.

Musikraft could probably make one–I wanted a neck with specs they didn't offer and they said they could for an upcharge.

Maybe check with them?

Re: Perfect neck

Pretty wide and thin with a flat back and a compound radius and large frets. Yet I don't own a guitar that truly represents that paradigm.

Re: Perfect neck

The two that like gravitate to most are the Wizard 2 on my RGs
And the slim C of my Epiphone Florentine

Thin flat radius

Someday I'm going to assemble a parts Tele, and probably will look into it at that time. I'm also not afraid of sandpaper and lots of work, so I may find one that I know is a little big, and bring it down to perfect size.

That would definitely get you into a nice custom guitar–love my Tele from parts!

I've had only great experiences with Warmoth and Musikraft–Musikraft had more options on the neck profile but Warmoth is pretty darn accommodating too...great quality with both as well.

Re: Perfect neck

I love my Warmoth. It's the best instrument I've ever had. I got a fatback which is 1" at the 1st and 12th fret. So I sanded it a bit to get it to taper. It also has the jumbo 6100 stainless frets, 10" radius, and a rosewood board. I think I'm going to get another with 11" radius and maple board.

Re: Perfect neck

Asking what everybody else likes.

OK.

Well, my theoretically perfect neck doesn't exist, unless I were to have some one custom make it. I can get close, though:

It has a V on the low end, about 7/8" thick. It's somewhere in between a hard V and a soft V. Down around the 12th fret, it's just a bit thicker (15/16" to 1"), and with a soft V to C shape. It has a 7.25" radius with heavily rolled edges. The frets are tall and skinny.

I can get that from Musikraft, and be perfectly happy. But what I really want is more radius. 6" or 5" would be ideal, I think. If it had to be compound to work, that'd be fine.

Re: Perfect neck

Width: 43mm,, going to 56-58mm high-up.
Depth: 18mm-19mm at 1st is fine, as long as it has a flattened back, Rounded back is "OK" for me if it's deeper.
Frets: medium-jumbo is my preference, but I'm good with anything in the jumbo realm if it's a thinner depth neck, like below 20mm at 1st.
Radius: 12"-17" is my zone of comfort. No big deal anywhere within that range, but ideal would depend on the other dimension factors.

Re: Perfect neck

I have to say, every time I get asked what my imagined custom guitar neck would be like (it happens more often than I ever thought it would), my answer is “my Music Man Reflex neck”. While I own guitars of all shapes, sizes and flavors, that guitar is why I haven’t ever gone custom - I don’t need to!

Re: Perfect neck

I have small hands, and my first guitar had quite a narrow nut width. I really like the Musicman EVH Axis neck profile.

So currently my favourite is the following Warmoth build;

- 1 5/8" nut width
- Wolfgang contour: asymmetrical, .815" at 1st fret, .940" at 12th fret
- Compound radius 10-16"
- SS6150 Jumbo frets, stainless steel: .104" x .047"

And I like either no finish, or a light oil finish. I don't like poly on my necks, especially gloss.

Really curious; is there something in particular that it's easier to do with lower radius necks? I know, "chords," but I have necks from 7"/7.25" to 16"/compound and I really don't notice that barre or open chords are any easier to make; that said lower radius doesn't bother me either, I don't even care to set my action super low any more anyway.

Re: Perfect neck

Whatever profile they used on my Charvel Dreamsicle is as close to perfect for me as I've played, although I like my Jackson USA Soloist just as well.

Re: Perfect neck

After using vintage Fenders for so many years, I moved on to G&Ls. Their C-shape neck still feels vintage to me but uses a 12" radius and medium jumbo frets. Very happy with them. All but one or two of my G&Ls feel exactly the same. The "odd" ones are just slightly fuller in my hand. These are Legacys...strat bodies. G&L offers a slew of neck options: woods, fingerboards, frets, profiles, widths, radii.

I also use Gibsons, also with the 12" radius. Shorter scale is handy for some fingerings. I have really fat necks on my R8 and R9 Historic Les Paul Reissues. Other Les Pauls have Slim Taper necks, as do my 335s. I have three 335s, and one feels "perfect".

But I also have two of the Guitar Center Custom Shop 1960 Plaintop Tobaccobursts, and these are just slightly fuller, but still Slim Tapers. Very, very comfortable...almost like the G&L Legacys.

Love all my guitars. I can adapt to most anything.

Re: Perfect neck

I'm particularly fond of the neck on my Jackson DXMG. I think that it's compound going from a 12" to a 26" radius.

My Gibson has a Slim D , that's what they call it with a 12 inch radius
It is slightly thicker than the Epiphone slim C
The Ehdwuld has the thicker D shape as well
The Dean Shire has the same Slim D shape with a 12 inch radius

They all feel comfortable

The MIM strat I had, was a Standard C.with a 9.5 radius
And it just didnt feel right at all

They just feel more naturally comfortable to me, and I really love having the picking area more arched too, not just the lower range of the neck.

I have several guitars with 12" radii, a few with 9.5", two with ~14", and even an acoustic with close to no radius. I can play them all without complaint. I just have my preferences for curvier boards, regardless.

Of note might be that I learned on 7-1/4" boards, and also play upright bass, which has about as much radius as one can get on a stringed instrument (outside of the broom handle on a wash tub bass).
