What's the difference in terms of composition and more importantly tone?

I've read loads of threads but am just confused on the difference!

Re: Phosphor Bronze or 80/20

I tried the 80/20 elixirs on my Martin, and they were super bright. I played them for about three days, stretching them before and after playing to try and dull them out, but I just couldn't get to likeing the harshness coming out of them. I think they would be great if you wanted a twangier sound out of an all mahogany guitar or something similar, but they just werent for me.

On the other hand the phosphor bronze eixirs still seem a little brighter then the standard martin strings that I had been using, but in a good way.

The 80/20 has more brass in then then the phosphor bronze. Brass will make the tone brighter and the strings will die pretty quickly by comparison. Here is a chart that will give you an idea of the tonal difference between one type of string to another. I think the 80/20 strings are good to record with, but if you are looking for a very natural sounding string I prefer the D'Adarrio J17's. The thickness of the string also helps in taking out some of the brightness.
