Picked up a pretty sweet Ibanez RX20 today, what can you tell me about it?

Re: Picked up a pretty sweet Ibanez RX20 today, what can you tell me about it?

When I looked up the specs on mine it was poplar. And mine is very light as well. I think the demon is really well suited in that poplar RG. It's bright, but not too bright. Poplar is good for all sorts of gain and cleans. I'd describe it as being almost a mix of Mahogany and Basswood. I'm putting together a poplar and maple HH tele and I'm excited. Poplar and maple with a rosewood fretboard is one of my favorite tone combinations. I had a semi-hollow poplar and maple hh tele with a rosewood fretboard and that thing put out any kind of gain I threw at it.
Sorry, totally got off on a tangent about poplar xD

I'd be happy if these were poplar...Mine is stamped 1997 on the neck/body..I've read some mixed ideas on what the body wood actually is..Some also thought basswood? I normally don't care for the JB pickup, but it has a series/spilt/parallel switch that I put in the guitar for the Dimebucker that was in the bridge...I have a feeling(hope anyway) that an A2 JB would be right in this guitar from my experiences with magnet swaps and Duncan pickups since about 04...Guess we'll see? LOL

Also....curious as to where you found those specs? I've researched this RX 20 and there isn't alot of great info, other than it's a cheap beginner guitar and they sell on E Bay for under $150 all the time...I gotta say,fo a cheap guitar,I really like the neck on this thing..I'm a Fender strat guy and I don't care for the body shape, but it's a practice fun guitar I use at home and not at gigs!

Cool.....Will check that out....

Here's some cool Fender trivia for ya...Forget what year it was,but I called and spoke to one of the folks at Fender about the MIM strat bodies at that time...At that time Fender was using Poplar because it was cheaper than alder...In later years,Fender went back to alder because poplar actually became pricier than the alder..This from the folks at Fender..It's tough to tell "tonally" the differences to my ears from alder, basswood, and poplar...Even ash...So many other variables in the mix! I do want a decent wood on the guitars I play and not cheapo plywood or the heavy agathis stuff.

Re: Picked up a pretty sweet Ibanez RX20 today, what can you tell me about it?

Mine has what looks like to be a vintage Fender style bridge on it....Wonder if mine is an earlier or later series, but it doesn't have the same bridge as the one you sent me the link to? Mine also has a maple body w/o the rosewood cap.

Oh ok...That's not even the same model....Mine is an RX 20...The link is a different model...So I go back to my original thoughts about the body wood on mine.

I think they've been bouncing back and forth with a couple bridges on them over the years.

Mine is exactly like this one but maple and not rosewood cap neck..
And mine is the last year of the RX series before they changed over to the GRX series after 1997..

Mine is the first actual RX series from 94-97...After that the model changed to GRX...They are different and probably upgraded a bit from mine...Mine is light, but it still might be plywood? LOL

LMAO.....You're right...Still a cool guitar and I got it for free...So far I have $12 into it for the Tele 3 way switch..All the other stuff I have here from doing guitar setups, electronics, pedal mods,etc...all these years! LOL

You just can't go wrong with a guitar you only put $12 into lol

I was gonna make it into a practice/project guitar, but after I got it all setup and loved the neck,I just decided to upgrade the pickups and electronics and play it...One of these days I am going to learn how to do a refin on it...I'm thinking Sonic Blue maybe?

It plays great, but that Dimebucker bridge pickup just wasn't doing it for me for my classic rock and blues styles...Not enough mids(too scooped) didn't cut right and I hate ceramic magnets! LOL

Early this week the JB will be here and we'll see what that does?
