Pickup advice needed for HH Super strat

Hi Everyone,

I have a Yamaha HH Super Strat (RGX820z) which you guys helped me with before, namely advising me to brighten the neck by swapping out the 250k pots to 500s. Made a huge difference in the neck. The guitar has 1 volume and 1 tone.

I have Dimarzios in there now. Air classic in the neck and a 36th in the bridge. I would like the neck to be stronger, more defined. In this guitar, it is too weak with gain and I find the Air Classics to have a slow pick attack. I want something that has a lot more bite with gain.

The 36th is OK, but I would like something stronger.

I am switching to Duncans for this next rounds, because I find that I like the increased top end that Duncans seem to have, as evidenced by the WLHs in my Godin Icon (built like an LP Custom).

Play through Fractal Ax8. Great piece of gear. Music is praise and worship at my church, but I personally don't play tele into vox with dotted-eighth delay stuff, I play mostly classic rock tones with humbuckers and overdrive/distortion. Play everything at home (pop, country, classic/progressive rock) but I am thinking of this particular guitar as a Pop-Rock beast.

Three options that I see:

PG/PG. I've never had a PG set before and people rave about them.

Custom X (where X = A2, A5, AUOA5, A8, Ceramic) with Jazz or 59 in neck, but never been a big fan of the 59n, especially with the boomy bass.

CC (C with A2) in bridge with PG neck.

C/59 hybrid with any particular neck pickup.

Looking for versatility: great cleans in neck and bridge, great classic rock neck tones.

Recommendations are appreciated!

In a super strat, I really dig the Parallel Axis pickups. I have the PATB-1n and a Blues Saraceno model in my all maple Carvin and they do a great job of thickening up the guitar without totally changing the voicing of the instrument.

Thanks, Benjy, I totally forgot about those!

No prob, man. I like the PATB Blues the most, but I also have a PATB-1b in a Godin, and it does heavier music very well. It's louder and more compressed, but it still retains a lot of detail under gain.

I dig the Jazz or Pearly Gates in the neck with either a Custom X or 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge for the tones you like.

So, Custom family or C/59? What would the differences be?

I think the C/59 takes one coil from a 59 and one from a Custom. I've never tried it but lots of folks around here were using them a while back.

The 59/Custom Hybrid is, power-wise, in between a 59 and a Custom. A Custom's EQ profile is like a PAF, but twice as loud. The Hybrid is the same sound, but, like 50% louder than the 59.
