Pickup sizes

Hey

I'm replacing the passive Emg Hz pickups in my Jackson probably with something from SD or dimarzio, will they be the same size as the emg pickups so i can simply remove the emgs and install the new ones without much hassle.

The stock pickups are also covered and new ones im considering on the whole aren't if it makes any difference.

Sorry if it's a nooby question but i don't want to buy new pups and find they dont fit properly

Yup, same size. I just put some HZs into a guitar that formerly held a pair of Teslas, then a pair of SDs, without issue.

Does the Jackson have a trem? If so, make sure you order something that's F-spaced. Duncan calls them Trembuckers.

Ye it does, i know i've looked into it. I knew the dimarzio did F spaced but i wasnt aware duncan trembuckers were f spaced.

It seems my pickups are held on by 6 screws. http://www.zzounds.com/item--JAC2913061 is you look there and roll over to enlarge the pickups you'll see what i mean, hard to explain.

No, 4 of the screws are used to mount the pickup ring to the guitar. Two screws, one on each end, hold the pickup in the mounting ring and adjust its height.

Ye i realised just after i typed that , so to install the pickups i just take the pickup ring off, replace pickups and screw ring back on, simples

Well unfortunately judging by the state of our soldering iron which hasnt been out of the garage for 5 year, i will be paying to get it installed, Cheaper than buying a new soldering iron

I doubt it. Buy yourself a soldering iron, people charge silly money to fit pickups.

Seriously. A good soldering iron can be found for about $20 in the US. Installing a pickup isn't difficult. And every guitarist should know how to swap them.

The SD I had swapped in/out was a Screamin' Demon Trembucker... it fit the ring, but barely.

The Teslas are standard size pups, I think, and the HZs fit perfectly.

Huh? What's your thinking here? EMGs are the same size as regular humbuckers. For that matter, so are trembuckers.

Ye i had a look at some dimensions and they are the same i think, its just the pole spacing thats different

EMG actives use bar magnets. So there is no size difference. Some EMG HZ's use pole pieces.

The difference between F sized (trembucker) and regular sized is the pole piece spacing. F size pickups are 53mm from high to low E. Regular pickups are 50mm. Physically the pickups are the same size as a standard humbucker.

IMHO, use an F spaced if that's what you need. But if you already have a standard pickup and want to use it, that's fine too. 3mm over the span of the strings isn't enough to really make a difference. Some strings just won't be centered over the pole pieces. Keep in mind that for the first 30 years or so of electric guitar usage, there was no such thing as F spaced. And a lot of those old guitars sound fantastic.

The actual size of the pickup rings for 99% of humbuckers is the same, regardless of the spacing (Gibson spacing or Fender/Floyd spacing). The exceptions are few and far between (like Fender's Wide-Range Humbucker and the Duncan El Diablo).

Most EMGs (both regular active and the passive HZ series) are a rail design under the cover, so string spacing isn't a concern.

Therefore, the OP can fit either a G-spaced or F-spaced humbucker in the bridge of his guitar... But being that he has a trem he's going to want to go F-spaced so that he doesn't have any possible volume loss on the E strings.

And the distance between the centre of the mounting screws was
Slightly different but by less than half a milimetre. Probably rounding
Differences or something

Yeah, you can swap them in and out all day long if you get bored. Most manufacturers conform to to the G-spaced and F-spaced standards.
