playing a u.s. amp on russian power

Hey guys, I just started work at guitar center and I've got a guy coming in tomorrow to buy an svt4pro and a cab to go with. He wants to take the amp to Russia where the power outlets are I think he said 220 watts. Is it possible for him to do this? My idea is that he should get a standard european/american power converter from radioshack or the like and use a power conditioner with it to protect the amp- would that work? Help me out if you know anything, I've never dealt with this before.

220 watts....I'm sure that he means 220 VOLTS

I think that he will need a step up transformer (115 volts to 220 volts) and a power conditioner would likely be a good idea.

I would think that the transformer will have to be spec'd to handle the current draw of the amp.

You might want to ask Scott_F , as he just built an amp that can be switched from 115 to 220, IIRC

:smack: Sorry, step down ....you are correct :smack:

Finally I know why I've been walking backwards all day.

I looked at your link, I'm just not sure what the specs need to be.

lol, yeah I'm sure you're right. He has a very heavy accent and broken english so it was hard to communicate. Are you sure you don't mean a step down transformer? I just found these http://www.buytravelconverter.com/searchresult~categoryid~545.html and they look like they would do the trick. I'll pm Scott though to be sure.

That should work fine. For long term use, he might want something rated a few amps higher. If he's fromRussia, he is probably used to this stuff. Just make sure it's heavy duty.

It might be much simpler, since provisions have already been made, to convert the amp to 220v... all Ampegs made since SLM took over incorporate "universal primary" transformers.....

Translation.... you just gotta move two wires internally, but you gotta know which ones. Get with GC "corporate" to find out who can handle this in your area..... We cover Houston and South Texas GC repairs at my shop.

I am not an expert on these things, but I did want to give you some MAD props on this whole thread. The fact that you didn't give your customer some BS answer that could potentially damage some gear, but instead sought some answers elsewhere.
I wish more folks could say, "Honestly, I don't know, but i'll do my best to find out"
SO KUDOS TO YOU!!!!

+1 .... Congrats, excellent customer service always pays off.

That is what keeps me going to my local ( family owned and operated) music store.
